Question about Maytag EPICz 3.7 cu. ft. Washer

1 Answer

I have a Maytag Epic Z MHWZ400TQ01, purchased August 2008. Just 2 seniors at home. Saturday night after a load on Rapid Wash it made a noise and I noticed it was not spinning. I kept looking at it and made some more clunking-metal noises. The drum was not moving. I opned the bottom pannel and found the belt laying there. There were threads of the belt on the motor drive. I bought a new belt and plan to install it tonight. Is ther anything I should be concerned with? What's the normal life of this $60 belt?

Hi

Your shift indicator is just a cable that runs from your shifter you will have to remove the steering wheel and access the cable to take a closer look there should be an adjunct on the unit if not then replace the cable or shifter. There could be an issue with the shifter and cable on the side of the transmission.

You can though try fixing it by your own…for that remove all the plastic around the steering wheel so that you can view underneath it to locate the mechanical assembly. May be you will find any broken plastic retainer which holds the electric cable. Re-connect the cable to its connector and secure it in place with multiple rubber "o-rings”. You have to check the size of the “o –rings”.

Hi

Please follow the points bellow to diagnose what could be wrong other than the broken belt.

1. Firstly and most commonly it could be that your motor brushes have worn out, and the motor is not turning. It is a simple task to check your brushes just remove them from the motor and look at the end of the carbon if it is very black and burnt it will need replacing and your machine will spin again. The picture below shows how a new brush looks with a long carbon part, and how a worn brush will look with a very short carbon part. On the very odd occasion if the carbon has worn very low it can short circuit the motor and blow a segment out of the armature, if this is the case a new motor is required.
2. This ones fairly obvious, The drive belt could be broken or has come off. Best way to test for this is to turn the drum by hand and if it turns very freely with no resistance and no motor noise then the belt is at fault. If the drum is stiff to turn then you probably have a sock stuck between the drum and tub assembly, in this case you will have to call an engineer.

3. If you still have water in the drum at the end of the wash cycle then you either have a blocked filter or your drain pump has failed. Firstly check your filter (if fitted) if that is not the problem switch your machine onto spin and if the pump is at fault you will hear a faint hum, if this is the case your pump will need replacing.
Check this link for the drain pump picture…

The picture above is of the most common type of drain pump used on washing machines and dishwashers. One other reason is if your drain hose goes to a spout under the sink check it to see if it is blocked as this will also cause the problem.

4. This one is VERY common to more modern machines that are run by electronics (most machines of 6 years or less). This problem arises when you try to spin one item on its own ie: bath mat, dressing gown ect, you will find that all the water has gone but it has not spun, this is because all modern machines use electronics to run all programs and they measure the drum speed very accurately to stop it doing an unbalanced spin. If you ever have this problem simply open the door and put a large dry bath sheet in with the load and spin it again, you should find it now spins OK.

5. Some electronic speed control modules suffer from poor manufacture and the soldering around the relays can burn thus creating a bad contact and eventually an open circuit. If you are lucky and good with a soldering iron you can clean up the joint and resolder it to repair the module. Machines known for this fault are: Hoover Performa, Indesit machines, Ariston, and some older Whirlpool machines. Most modules are located at the lower back of the machine.

OH,OH!!!, I think the main bearing is bad on the washer, see if the inner tub has play by moving it up and down. even if is not I'm sure the bearing is bad. with time and clothing weight the water seal worn allowing water to wash the lubrication in the bearing. this is a mayor repair.

We have purchased a Maytag front loading high efficiency wash machine and were told to only use HE detergent. A neighbor said we could use 2x detergent. I thought the HE was lower sudsing than 2x and...

Use the HE rated detergent. The 2x detergent is a consentrated form of the old detergent formula. 2x is fine in a top load machine. Oversudsing will occur in front load machines causing F code errors.

Washer makes loud, thumping noises during spin cycle.

support bracket that supports the tub is breaking. stick your hand inside and push up and down and see if its coming apart. if u look at it when it runs does it wobble?(the tub) if not take a look at the pulley on the back and see if its wobbly.

hi there,

the FH error means it's either you have a drain problem if there is water in it or if if there is now water in it, make sure that both water inlets are turned all the way up. check to make sure that you don't have any water leaks anywhere visible.

Please help me,,,, my maytag epic z front load washer

Hi,
I think you've actually got an uprated control board.

Modern designs allow for less water usage - most in as you say about 3"
Water level is determined in 2 ways #1 pressure - A pressure switch is used with an inverted container low down in the water. As level rises, pressure builds untill the switch opens and the water shuts off.
#2 Time - The valve is only allowed to open for a preset time (to prevent flooding)
If the first board was faulty, the pressure switch probably was being ignored, so was overfilling.
Older models also used more water per wash.

Shutting off after 10 minutes on a quick wash? - if it performs a full cycle in this time, it's working normally. As I said - just updated.

Let me know if there are any defects or faults , otherwise, it seems to be "modernised" by using the new board.
