I guess I neglected to say that when we open the cover the printheads don't move at all.Any other ideas?

  • golden 2 May 21, 2008

I tried unplugging everything from the source and waited a few minutes. When I plugged it back in the cartridges still won't move and there is an alarm light and a 5100 Error code. I also tried moving them manually, it won't budge. Is this printer worth saving or would it be cheaper to buy a new one??

  • golden 2 May 21, 2008

I tried averything you suggested step by step. I thought it was going to work and then it went back to the error code. Thanks anyway for all your help!!

  • golden 2 May 21, 2008

The printer is a few years old and they don't make this particular model anymore apparently. I think I will purchase a new printer, is there a better one that you can recommend? I would appreciate any suggestions and will certainly give you good feed back for your expertise. I'm newly divorced so you will probably see me on here frequently!! I am pretty challenged when it comes to fixing computers and printers as you can see.

First, try a hard reset: Unplug the printer from power source and computer, wait about 2 minutes and replug to power source and computer. Switch it on and open the hood and see if the printheads come to the centre for changing.

If that doesnt work, try to prod the printheads with a gentle force and see if that helps to get the heads moving.

Also try to clean the carriage with a damp cloth and look for any debris that may be hindering the movement of the printheads.

Found this on a different forum:
"Look in to the printer you will see the harness you just took the
cartridges out and running through the harness is a chrome bar and
remember the bar, now look up just a bit you will see a thin maybe a
quarter of an inch wide a plastic strip that runs accross the printer
and through the back of the cartridge harness and is supported on each
end and one end has a tension spring remember the plastic strip, now on
the left hand side at the front of the printer when you look in the
printer you will see a gear reach i with your fingers and turn the
gears turn them to make sure nothing is obstructing them if you make a
full rotation it should be ok"

    2. Try this in the printer dialogue box:
    "Printer" --> "Properties" --> Maintenance --> Custom
settings: Check the box for "Align heads manually", then click
"send". This may resolve/clear the error.

    3. This error means that there is something obstructing the printing
process. Check inside your printer through the gears that you can see
under the lid. There should be something obstructing the gears such as
dirt or bits of paper. Please check very carefuly for debris, a small piece of paper or foreign matter that may have gotten stuck inside.

    4. It could be the timing strip (plastic strip about 1/4" in width) is jumping out of the printing bus
where the printer head sits in. Push the bus in the middle and try with
1 hand on each side to see if the timing strip passes easy through the
bus. If not move it a bit up and down and it snaps back into position.

Here is another solution from another forum:
"As others had pointed out before, it can have alot to do with some
obstruction in the print path, the gears, or ink on the clear plastic
encoder strip. You're on the right track - I found the the purge cap
(the white sliding mechanism that the print head parks to when it's not
in use) was not lubricated well enough from factory. If you lubricate
the sliders with some white grease (don't get it on the small wipers or
the black caps) the mechanism can now slide more freely, and the unit
can park the head properly without giving you the dreaded head homing
error 5100. Keep in mind that this repair will probably require you to remove the
right panel off of the printer to gain access to the purge mechanism.
There are two screws behind the printer, and two in front for each
corrosponding side panel (the front screws are behind the grey front
panel of the printer - open the top cover to see the clips which hold
    the front cover on)"

If nothing works, the I'm afraid you may have to get the machine serviced or buy a new one (whicher works out cheaper for you..)

    Hope that helps!

Well, it is very difficult to say which printer will suit you best. Its all upto your budget and requirements. I would recommend HP printers. They are more stable and dependable than the others.

Try the HP site and see what you like :)

The first thing to try is to unplug the printer for a few minutes and plug it back in and see if they will move over when you open the cover. If not, then your motor is bad or they may be stuck, try pulling them over yourself as one option. I will also see how common this may be with this printer and see if there is a known solution for it and will post back soon. sound good? also if you have any other questions, please let me know, thanks

the spool the cartridges are on, may not be greased enough but pulling them over by hand and pushing them back should not wreck your printer, so please try this first

since printers are pretty cheap, it would probably be better to replace it but you can try resetting this error.

I will get the recommended reset posted here in a few minutes

you should try moving it manually when it is unplugged if you had it turned on

  • Benjamin Patri
    Benjamin Patri May 21, 2008

try this first even though you might not be able to do all of it

    1. Allow print head to cool down

    2. Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable to ensure a secure connection

    3. Press ON/OFF switch to reset the multifunction device

    4. Reseat ink cartridge (MP160 / MP180 / MP460)

this error has to do with the carriage which means the little membrane strip connected to the cartridges and everything connected to them. Make sure nothing is in the way or broken if you can.

This is an older printer correct? Do you want to proceed with more possible options to try or do you just want to go and purchase a new one?

If you are satisfied with what we have done, please feel free to give me some feedback by rating my solution.

I will be glad to answer any further questions you may still have or any advice that you want. Have a Great Day!

Unplug the printer from the main AC outlet, wait about 2 minutes and plug it back in.
I would suggest to try to move them by hand very gentle and re-start the printer. If that did not work check for a broken belt.

    Try the following:

    1. Turn off printer
    2. Hold down Resume button and press Power button.
    3. Keep holding down Power button and let Resume button go.
    4. Press Resume button 2 times then let BOTH buttons go.
    5. Green lights will flash and then stop blinking.
    6. When green lights are solid, press the Resume button 4 times.
    7. Press the Power button and the printer should turn off, if not, press the Power button once more.
    8. Your printer should respond as normal.

  • Jaime Hernandez May 21, 2008

This error is an error within the printer. This error means that there is something obstructing the printing process. Check inside your printer through the gears that you can see under the lid. There should be something obstructing the gears such as dirt or any paper particles. if there was even some paper caught underneath the rollers try to jiggle around to even see. Check VERY thoroughly.

With the printer on, open the cover and the printheads should move to the center where you can get at them.

Where can I get a Parts List for a Canon MX850 MF Unit

Ink Absorber Full

This may clear the ink absorber problem.
There is ink absorbers located at both ends of the printer where the ink head move.
To dry the ink absorber, power up the printer and open the cover so the ink cartridges and print head will move to the middle of the printer.
Then take several sheets of absorbent tissue, fold it into a pad and place it inside the printer over the ink absorber on the far left hand side of the printer to soak up the excess ink. You may need to change the absorbent tissue a few times. Then repeat the same procedure on the right hand ink absorber.
Close the lid and the printer should now function normally.

I want to change the black ink cartridge for my Canon MP 490 Series printer. Where are the cartridges located? I do not have a Manual

When you open your printer to see the inside of it (you open it either on the front or side) you should see the cartridge at the far right or left. If you still don't notice it then just print and it'll move from left to right as if it were scanning. That is your cartridge. You can take it out then. If it has a latch then lift it up, but other than that; that's all you need to do to change it. Oh and also sometimes if the ink gets low you can shake the cartridge a little.I hope this helps!!jessicascott.png

Canon printers and cartridges have their own chip that recognized the presence of original ink, either the ink you bought is not compatible or the printer need to be reset
