Question about Digital Cameras
There are a number of causative problems that can lead to you battery not taking a charge, The charger itself may NOT be the problem, With a simple voltmeter it is easy to see if the charger is outputting the correct voltage. A multi-meter with a milliamp function can tell you if the current flow is correct by placing the meter in series with the the charging circuit (you can cut the positive lead from the charger to the camera and re splice it after the test is completed).
The voltage, amperage (charging rate) and type of current (AC or DC) is usually listed on the charger on a label or embossed in the plastic housing. If the voltage is OK but there is little or no current flow, the problem is probably in the battery- it has come to the end of its charge/discharge cycle and needs replacement. If there is no voltage coming from the charger it may need replacement but you must make sure it is exactly rated to accommodate you camera and battery, Batteries are DC. The input to you charger or the primary voltage is AC and needs to be stepped down and rectified to DC before it can safely charge the battery. Some chargers have the reactivation (conversion) built in to the charger- some have the output or secondary voltage still as AC and the rectifiers are in the camera. Just be sure all the specs match. If you can find the exact replacement unit- you don't have to take theses issues into consideration.. Sometimes the problem can just be a poor connection between the camera and the charger- check it out.
I hope this helps. Lightingman (Ed)
