Question about E-Machines eMachines Desktop PC

1 Answer

Windows XP won't finish setting up.

I used a wipe drive cd and erased my computer's hard drive. I am now trying to install the stuff back into the computer using the restore cd's. The restore went fine. I was setting up the windows xp and I can get as far as "the computers name" screen and when I press next it will not continue. It always stops at this point. What do I need to do?

Go to the link posted below and download (free) DBAN disk wiper. It will be an image (ISO) and then burn it to a CD or DVD disk. IMPORTANT: Make sure you have the BIOS set to CD=First Boot Device.
Now insert the CD or DVD in your driver and reboot. Choose "Automatic". Let it run, it will take a while so go and watch a movie or something. It will wipe the drive including partition. It would take the equivalent of the FBI to recover any data off the hard drive once it is finished, this is a pro low-level data remover.
http://www.dban.org/download
click the red "DOWNLOAD" button.
Incidentally, before you install Windows7 I strongly suggest you run the (free) Microsoft system analyzer to make sure W7 will run on your legacy system.
If there are further questions, I hang out at www.suggest-a-fix.com
which is a free computer help forum. Post in the Hardware section and I will be along. This forum is not set up for complicated problems that require repeated, in-depth communication.

Problem with HP pavillion ze4900 harddrive. bios says no IDE device when trying to find hard drive.

Hello,

You can try to boot from CD/DVD drive with XP cd to see if the install program can find the hard drive. Try to use default setting in the BIOS.

Sounds to me like your hard drive crashed. I had one that did this and same thing. You can either replace the hard drive, use an external hard drive/flash drive (load the os and download laptop drivers) or use a cd based OS like Knoppix.

If you need help with the XP CD let me know.

I hope this helps!!!

Unistall windows 8 pro

You have to install another operating system
Restart your computer during the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup usually the Delete or F2 key

Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS then using the arrow keys scroll down to advanced bios features press enter change your first boot device to cd press escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart

Note this will erase you operating system you will have to have an operating system disk to load it onto you hard drive or create a partition to load another operating system

Note after you have loaded the operating system you should go back and change the first boot device to failsafe or optimised defaults after windows has loaded

your computer will automatically restart it might restart 2 times one to finish the installation
the next will be because the operating system is loaded and will boot from your cd

or
Formatting a hard drive to erase its contents does not mean the files are necessarily gone forever. Using data-recovery software, someone still could retrieve sensitive data and files from your hard drive even after you've formatted it. Instead of simply formatting your hard drive, use disc-cleaning software to permanently erase its contents. Disc-cleaning programs work by repeatedly overwriting the contents of a hard drive with random data patterns, making it virtually impossible to recover the original files. Download and install the freeware program Active@ KillDisk (see Below). http://www.killdisk.com/downloadfree.htm Click the Windows "Start" button and select KillDisk from the "All Programs" list. Click the check box next to the hard drive you want to erase in the "System Local Disks" menu. Press the "Kill" button. Select the erasing method you want to use from the "Erase Method" drop-down menu. Active@ recommends using the "US DoD 5220.22-M" method. Click "Start" to begin erasing the hard drive. Download and install the freeware program Hard Drive Eraser (see Below). http://www.harddriveeraser.org/ Click the Windows "Start" button and select Hard Drive Eraser from the "All Programs" list. Check the radio button next to the hard drive you want to erase under "Select Drive to Erase." Select the erasing method you want to use from the "Shredding Scheme" drop-down menu. The developers of Hard Drive Eraser recommend "DoD 5220-22 M" Press the "Start" button to begin erasing the hard drive. Download and install Iolo DriverScrubber (see Below). Click the "Windows" Start button, "All http://www.iolo.com/ds/3/ Programs" and then the DriverScrubber program icon. Click "Wipe all contents of a drive," and then click "3.5-Inch Floppy Disk." Insert a blank floppy disk and click "Next." Restart your computer with the floppy disk still inserted. Your computer will boot directly to DriveScrubber. Press the down arrow on your keyboard to highlight the hard drive you want to format in the "Available Physical Drives" menu. Press the space bar to select the hard drive. Press "Enter" to continue. Press the down arrow to highlight "Seven Overwrites" in the "Available Data Wiping Methods" menu, and then press the space bar to select it. Press "Enter" to continue. Press "CTRL," "ALT," "Shift" and "W" at the same time to wipe the hard drive. Hope this helps.

I am returning a computer I've used for aboput a month. How do I erase the hard drive first?

If you mean wiping out all the data and operating system then -
This is generally howyour format the hard disk and install Windows.
First you need a Windows XP or Windows Vista installation CD and the productinstallation code, which is printed on the Windows label on the bottom of yourlaptop.
Boot up with the Windows installation CD start and follow the instructions toinstall Windows.
Next Delete the existing Windows partition.
Next Create a new partition.
Next format this new partition - Format the partition in NTFS not a quickformat. This will prepare the Windows for a clean install.
If you do not wish to continue installing Windows then Exit and shut down the computer.

The computer could not make booting from cd . and the window xp which is installed could not continoue to start but it is allways restart in the middle of the process

have you check your bios set up to make first boot as cd room?
press delete or f2 button when the computer start go to booting selection and set first boot to cd room, if you have done this way and still won't boot try to change your cd room or windows cd, it seems your cd room or windows bootable cd is bad, and also try to clear your memory (ram) by erasing your ram from dust by using a pencil eraser, to fix your windows problem without re-install your windows you can try to put your hard drive (which contains windows xp) in another usable computer, make it as secondary master or slave (to do it you can replace cdroom and change with your hard drive) ,after that you can check on my computer tab if your hard drive has detected. check in what drive is your hard drive (for example d)then go to run type cmd, type your drive which contains an error windows (D:) after the path was located to D: (your hard drive that contains an error windows) type chkdsk /f /r then enter, wait till the process done, it will take about 20-30 minuets and it will repair your windows

Not able to open windows

Sounds like a hard Drive problem. A virus actually. The Best thing to do if Safe Mode Failed is the Repair Your system, to do this insert your XP CD and wait until it says 'Press any key to boot CD' Press any key and follow instructions to repair windows. If it works, run a virus scan immediately. If Not, take it itno a computer technitian to look at it if you want the stuff on your Hard Drive, of if you feel you don't care too much just wipe the Hard Drive and Re-Install Windows XP. just do the same thing as repair but instead follow the instructions for Installing XP and choose either Clear or Erase Hard drive if you don't want the info or choose don't clrear or Erase if you really want stuff from your hard drive, But run a Virus scan Immediately asap.

Hope This Helps
