Question about Samsung SD 616E (729507925578) Internal DVD Drive
I have a Samsung SD 616E Internal CD/DVD Drive that is not recognized by my Dell Dimension 8200. I am running Windows XP SP3.
When I boot & enter setup, the drive is not listed and is showing "Not Installed" in the boot sequence option. It is also not listed as a drive when I select go into My Computer. The Device Manager also does not show the drive at all.
I have checked the cable connections (appear correct, and the cable only works one way). The ribbon cable appears in good shape. I have also tried both connections on the cable to no avail.
I have also tried all 3 jumper settings (Master, Slave, & Cable Select). The drive is currently jumpered to Master.
I have also tried the RegEdit fix (Upper & Lower Filters issue) and they are not listed in the registry, so that is not the issue.
There is power to the drive as the light comes on when I place a CD in the drive. It appears to attempt to read, then stops after about 8 seconds.
I believe there are 3 possibilities here:
Bad Ribbon Cable
Anybody got any other ideas?
Check in the BIOS if the interface/port to which you're connecteing has not been disabled. Most bios ' access by pressing del shortly after startup before Windows has started loading. Others access by pressing F1 or F2. (It should indicate what is needed at the bottom of the screen at startup).

Testimonial: "I appreciate your response. I think it's the drive or cable. BIOS for 2nd Drive 0 is on auto, but boot seq says unrecognizable."
This is a problem with a corrupt registry entry. If you click on the "yellow ! examination" under hardware in systems, you will see the error code. Goggle that code and there are detailed instructions on deleting the corrupt entry in the registry and getting your Samsung DVD working again. This solution has been used very effectively in our shop over and over. Good Luck!!

Click on Start, Run, and type regedit and press Enter
Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders
This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.
If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete
After deleting the keys, close the registry editor
Reboot your computer
Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.
