Scanning in gray scale alone will not bring down the scannned documents size alone. In your scan settings there should be a setting whereby you lower your DPI (dots per inch) or scan resolution. The standard DPI is usually about 300. Try lowering it to about 100 and check the scanned document size again. Lower your DPI until you reach the appropriate document size for emailing etc.

If you are not getting scan options, make sure you have installed the scanning software along with your drivers.
Check in Control Panel / Scanners and Cameras and try to scan from there.

The manual for this printer is available here from HP, and it covers the scanning operations. You can also download the HP software here which will allow you to directly scan to your computer. If you don't use the HP software, you can use the Windows Scanner and Camera Wizard to scan.
You may need to have the "full-featured" software installed on your computer in order to perform scanning operations. If you do not, you may download this software for your HP model here:
please select the area which has to be scanned and reduce the resolution. in some model it is given that you can scan image for email, please select that.
You need to have scan software running on a connected computer. When you press scan on the HP you have choices, scan to pc, to e-mail, to file, choose what you want and the scan software should open to scan and preview and give you choices as to scan quality type and size, If the pic is on the scanner, you just scan and either accept or delete the image.
