Follow the steps.
First download the lastest Firmware ( OS-(firmware_a605.aos)) from the ARCHOS website.
Plug your device to your PC
Power down the unit completely, While off hold down the Power and TV/LCD button. This will bring up again the screen with 3 options. 1) No 2) Repair 3) Formate Disk
choose the Repair option, wait for 5 mins then you can see your device detected in the PC.
copy the OS .aos file downloaded from ARCHOS website to the root of the device not in any folders.
In your device now choose the option done. It will update the new OS and it will restart autoatically.
Try it if its not working come bak to me,
All the Best.

When you are connected to a Windows® network, you can browse the shared folders of other computers in the network, using the Archos File Browser. From the Home Screen, select the Browser icon. Once in the browser, select ‘Network’. Your device will search for other computers in the Windows® network and you can start browsing their shared contents.
Using the Archos double browser, you will be able to transfer files from a computer onto your device, or transfer files from your device onto a computer’s write-enabled shared folder.
Use Windows media center as a go between if you have the capability. I would not expect that much functionality from the Archos. The extra step will save time in the long run. There is a usb port on the DVR station. Haven't really tried to utilize it, yet. It does recognize a thumb drive when plugged in. I just wouldn't expect you will get the same ease of operation as using media ctr.
On your Archos 5 go into tools -> Files and you should have two Archos 5 tabs. Change one to your USB stick and the other to the Archos 5 and copy and paste. I have not tested this, but this should work. Good Luck.
Thanks and credit to eyez12 - the 2nd option below worked for me
try going to menu, settings, system, and then clicking the update ARCLibrary button, that was all it took for me. if that doesn't work then go to repair and formatting tools and click "clear temp system files and cache"
