Windows Mobile Device Center Error

WMDC synched fine with my PDA running on Windows Mobile 6.0 until about Feb this year. All I get is this red cross on the WMDC with "error." No other message. Message on my PDA Activesynch says, "Port not available......close any programs that use the port, restart the device and try again."
I've been looking for a solution since Feb, so I've tried just about everything suggested in forums - uninstalled, reinstalled WMDC, reset my PDA, disabled McAfee, even reset my laptop to factory settings (lost all data). Nothing helped.
I don't care about synching with Outlook but this is so frustrating because I cannot even transfer or backup my PDA files.
Please HELP!
Cheers,
Trish

Sorry, the advice given didn't even match my question. I don't need to know the history or basics of what a PDA is - I've been using one since last year!
Anyone with experience troubleshooting Windows Mobile Device Center?

  • Trish Barber Apr 23, 2008

Thanks for your prompt reply. Unfortunately, I've tried downloading WMDC 6.1 THREE times. Didn't work. I've also tried all the troubleshooting solutions in the microsoft website - nothing worked.
I'm not the only one encountering this problem. There're many people looking for solutions in forums, and like me, they're not getting any help from microsoft.

  • Trish Barber Apr 23, 2008

Yes, I'm using Vista. Thanks for your suggestions. I'll give them a try and keep you informed.
    Cheers.

    Hi,
Thanks for your post. I'm using a bluetooth connection. I've also tried the USB as suggested in the microsoft forums. Doesn't work either.
I use a router and wifi to access internet with my PDA and that works just fine. I can download my emails but it won't let me download programs such as skype for win mobile.
When I connect my PDA with my laptop via bluetooth or USB, they connect fine. I can see all my PDA files using win explorer from my laptop, but I can't copy or transfer anything between my PDA and laptop without going through WMDC.

  • Trish Barber Apr 23, 2008

How do I reset the router? Do I just switch it off and on?

  • Trish Barber Apr 23, 2008

    Hi Coolguy008,
Thanks for your suggestions. I'll leave the router as it is for now. I agree it's likely due to the antivirus or firewall because around the same time my PDA stopped synching, itunes and skype also stopped working. I suspect it must be a vista update or McAfee update that's causing all the problems coz everything worked fine before. Itunes only recently started working again after I downloaded the latest patch. Skype works but only for chats. When I try to connect a call, something keeps shutting it down.
However, I have tried disabling the entire McAfee to no avail. I'm tempted to get rid of Mcafee and go with norton instead but I recall having other types of problems with norton in my old desktop with win xp.
    Cheers.

    Hi All,

Thanks for your suggestions. I followed the instructions on the links you have provided. Same thing. Nothing's helped.

However, I also tried to connect my PDA to my old laptop which is running XP with the old Active Sync software. The PDA used to work well with XP and was still working until I swapped it to my new laptop which is running Vista.

The interesting (and frustrating) thing is, the PDA won't sync with the old laptop either! I think it's something to do with the PDA itself. It connects but just won't sync. With the old XP laptop I can even copy a file from laptop to PDA but I cannot copy any PDA files to the laptop.

The only thing I recall doing differently before all this nightmare started is, I put in a new micro-SD card. I upgraded from 2GB to 4GB. However, when I tried swapping back to the old 2GB storage card, it still won't sync!

Another weird error I keep getting is, when I tried to sync with WIndows Media Player, it keeps saying that the version of Media Player on my PDA is out-of-date. Fair enough with Vista coz of the updates, however, I get the same out-of-date error message with the old XP version and I have not connected the old laptop online since Nov last year so no way the Media Player could've been updated at any time.

    Any other ideas?

Hi,

On your PDA to PC sync concern;

Are you using Vista? If yes have you tried updating your USB port drivers (not from Microsoft) but from the laptop manufacturer or if a desktop, the motherboard manufacturer?

Additionally, there may be firewall and/or proxy issues. You might find this and this interesting.

I you are running XP, pls verify that likewise your USB port drivers are updated from the PC/motherboard manufacturer.

Pls post back for any developments or even the lack of it.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back as requested, how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Ok,Can you please try reseting th router once.I believe this will fix it.
Please let me know the results

  • Priya darshan Apr 23, 2008

The first thing i want to say that if you reset your router you will have to configure it so that you can acccess the net.Because once you reset the router it will restore to the factory defaults. So if you know how to configure your router once it is restored to the factory defaults only then i'll let you know how to do that or else you may have problem configuring it.

  • Priya darshan Apr 23, 2008

Another problem that i believe can be with your anitvirus or the firewall as suggested by my friend Benimur so you can try turning of them both and see if you can transfer.

This is all from my side you can cooperate with Benimur if my solutions don't help.

    Goodluck..

    HI,

Don't go for Norton. Its just waste of money as well as waste security. You can go for BIt defender total security. Its a realy nice antivirus and internet security provider also.Believe me you'll just love this software..
You can download the full trial version for 1month form HERE if you like it then you can purchase it.

    Goodluck...

Active sync

Hello,

Depending on your OS, you'll need Windows Mobile Device Center 32-bit or 64-bit. ActiveSync is for Windows XP machines;

Microsoft Windows Mobile Device Center 6 1 for Windows Vista 32 bit

Windows Mobile Device Center 6 1 Driver for Windows Vista 64 bit

Thanks

Need to upgrade sofware to a windows 7 system at home and sony doesn't offer support the sony clie sj30 pda. Can you help me?

Windows7 doesn't use activesync it uses Window Mobile Device Center to sync with mobile devices (only running microsoft software)
Your PDA runs on Palm OS4.1 so W.M.D.C. is not an option

Palm desktop 6.2 may be your only hope, some people have managed to get it to run with Windows7.
here is the link to the 6.2 download with notes

From where i can get pc suite of i-mate k-jam and how i can mark all the contacts in contact

Depending on your PC, you must have either ActiveSync (for Windows XP) or WMDC (for Vista and 7) installed and running, prior to connecting your device to your PC via USB. You can download the appropriate application to your case from this location.
Hope you are able to sort your problems out.
Cheers! Carlos

How can I Connect my HTC p3400i with my laptop

with an USB-miniUSB cable torught active sinc ( windows XP ) or Sync Center (windows vista and windows 7). The main problem is that you need to install the windows mobile device center. On XP is easy ... insert the disc in youre CD drive and install the software. In Visla you will have to download the Windows Mobile Device Center from microsofts download center ( requires windows authentification and if youre windows is not licensed you will fail to authentificate and so to download the WMDC ) i will make a upload with the WMDC on filefactory so you could install it safely. Works in Vista 7 and XP but in XP you have to install ActiveSync first ( from the CD witch came with the phone.. if i remember right it's the "Getting Started" disc )
http://www.filefactory.com/file/ag7afgd/n/drvupdate-x86_exe this is where you can download the WMDC for PDAs

With Vista, there has been a change from Activesync to Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC) which does the same thing that activesync does.

You need to download and install WMDC and then you should be able to sync.

I cannot get my new ASUS A626 to synch to my PC I am running Vista.

I am having the same problem and according to the computer experts at Staples in Montana they say that there is an upgrade in Windows that we need to download to the A626. However, I have searched Windows and not found anything so, I am off to Staples to have them fix it for $10. Best of luck everyone.
