You can adjust the convergence by press the flash focus button on the TV. If the issue persists, then try resetting the TV to the factory settings. If the issue persists, try power resetting the TV. Turn Off the TV and remove the power plug from the wall outlet for 1 minute and reconnect it and check the operation. If the issue persists, then the TV requires service. You can contact the service center and check for the cost of repair. It is just a small adjustment.

An older tube model - audio okay, no video - only a narrow line across the middle horizontally

Sad to say this is likely the death of it.
Technically, the time base line output has ceased to function.
Unless you feel it's a full blown crusade to have a vintage working TV you're going to have a hell voyage (unless you're extemely lucky) of cost in time and money to get that put right which you may decide aint' a road worth going down.
Better to put your money into a new flat screen TV but if you've the storage space don't scrap the old TV. Depending on it's present age it will be worth something soon to a collector or theatre/TV/movies props hire supplier.

When adjusting the convergence, ended up with a concave screen, then it smoked. Is this a power supply, or worse? Is there any advice that you could give me on this...

Thats usually indicating the ICs have failed. Usually with that model its best to replace the board rather than try replacing the individual components as ther are several 3.9 ohm resistors that will need to be checked and possibly replaced along with both ICs. www.tvcircuitboards.com should have the replacement board for your model if you need one.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Have a sony kp-57ws500, tubes are going bad. Should I fix or get new tv. How much are new tubes. Red is out now. How much is one?

This is one of a group of sets with bad tubes, many were replaced under warranty (it seems they actually put the wrong ones in thousands of these sets)

The tubes are no longer available from Sony and only available on a rebuild basis---figure over 350 per tube plus labor.

IF THE SET IS COMING ON RED, GREEN OR BLUE SCREEN, AND OR SHUTS OFF---THERE IS A WAY THAT REQUIRES NO PARTS TO TRY TO ADJUST IT.

Give me a better idea of what the set is or is not doing and I would be happy to advise you.

Mitsubishi WT-46807?

If convergence goes in and out you need to replace the two STK-392-570 convergence chips this set uses.

I have repaired a lot of these sets and sometimes the chips are flaky---convergence will come and go--in every case replacing them cured the problem.

Considering you can buy a pair of the chips on Ebay for about 12 dollars plus shipping if you or someone you know can do this repair--you can save the set and a lot of money.

Most shops are going to get at least 300 for this repair.

By the way-----I HAVE START TO FINISH, STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS FOR THIS REPAIR.

They tell you everything that you will need to do it and how to do it. The reason I have them is so many people here have asked me the same questions I composed them---I got 2 comments today from people who had success with the instructions.

First convergence problems, not won't turn on

The problem is the Convergence circuit and the reason it does not power up is that one or two of the 5a pico fuses have opened when the Convergence IC failed. It is either going to be a pair of STK392-570's or a single IC STK393-110. That is as long as this set is a Mitsubishi made in the last 7 to 9 years.
I would estimate the cost to repair 280.00 plus service call fee if any, plus tax on parts.
Let the Tech check it out. If if it cost less than 400.00 to repair, it may well be worth taking the chance.

Projection TV convergence problem

Get it fixed, because this is a simple repair. One of your convergence IC's has burned out and needs to be replaced. A good tech can fix the set in-house in about an hour and a half, and I charge $150 when I fix a set like that but shops in your area will vary so ask around. If you have a satellite receiver or a cable box, the changeover in 2009 should not affect you.
