Hi

Older top load washers use a belt to drive to transfer the energy from motor to drum. However, if the belt slips, stretches, or breaks, it can cause friction and a burning smell, most likely a burning “rubber” smell. The belt is located either from the back access panel or from the underside of the washer. The solution is to replace the belt with a new one. To replace the belt you can open the back lid of the washer

To replace the belt carefully pry up on front washer top to release plastic keeper pins, remove 2 Phillips screws from beneath lower front washer panel, slightly lift upward on panel to release. Now remove old broken belt, push new belt beneath large tub pulley and put belt on small motor pulley. After this push back belt tension /idler arm, start belt on large tub pulley, turn tub pulley by hand to run belt on, release tension on idler arm. Replace front panel and lower top.

Please check this diagram for the part number F28(drive belt)--

My ge heavy duty large capacity washer stopped during wash and smelt burning rubber... Is it worth fixing?

certainly-- the burning rubber is probably a loose or broken drive belt underneath
however the ultimate decision can be made after a service person has inspected it and quoted on repairs and parts ( if still available)

MOTOR SMELLS OF BURNT MOTOR WINDINGS. iS IT NORMAL

No, the pump works while spinning. The burnt smell is probably the belt, especially if your wife saw smoke. Did she put a big load in it at the time?

The belt will slip until the tub catches up with the motor. If there is a heavy load, it can burn the belt up. I would replace it. Make sure the idler pulley on the motor moves freely also.

My 2001 suzuki grand vitara xl-7 power steering went out yesterday. a belt started sqeeling and then i smelt burnt rubber.

Firstly, check all the bearings that the belt rolls over to make sure that none have seized. If all are free, then your P/S belt may have been loose, and the load when the steering was used was more than the belt could transmit, so it started slipping. Get a new belt fitted and tensioned correctly. From memory, this belt also does the A/C, so maybe try turning that off to reduce the load on the belt until you can get it fixed.

Whirlpool gold UIltimate care heavy duty super capacity washer

Well you can check the capacitor with a meter for farads, but it sounds like you have a clutch and/ or gearcase failure causing the motor to overheat. The second thing to do is unplug the washer and check the timer. I would right after the agitation to inspect for heat and burnt connections.

WASHER STARTS MAKING LOUD NOISES WHEN SPINNING SOUNDS LIKE IT IS OFF BALANCE BUT NOT. ALSO FAINT SMELL OF BURNT RUBBER.

The washing machine will do this if the load is unbalanced. Usually due to either an excessively heavy and/or large load. The burning rubber smell is just the drive belt dealing with the imbalance. Often the washing machine will self-balance itself, but it's a good idea to open the lid and re-distribute the load. Or remove some stuff if it seems too heavy.
