It could be that your battery is defective/worn out. If the computer just shuts off immediately (doesnt try to hibernate/standby) then you're likely looking at replacing the battery. They can suddenly do things like this if a cell shorts out in the battery or due to common wear. But first, here are a couple of things you can try.
1. Try reseating the battery (pull it out and put it back in). Sometimes something that simple can fix the problem.
2. Try to calibrate the battery. Your computer may come with instructions on how to do this, but if not you can do it manually. Turn the computer on but go into BIOS (press F10 at the compaq logo screen). Don't load your operating system
Unplug your computer. If it turns off at this point, your battery is already toasted. Replace it.
If the computer keeps running, let it go until it finally shuts off due to battery drain. Then plug it back in and let it recharge completely. This will let the microchip in the battery learn its charge potential and may allow you to get more life out of it.
Note: Calibrating these batteries is good practice but it shouldn't be done very often. If your calibration doesn't work after 1 or 2 tries, you probably still are looking at a dead battery.

I had the same problem. My laptop battery would indicated low battery as soon as I unplugged the cord but it been charging all day. I bought a new battery off ebay and it works perfectly.
SOURCE: my compaq presario r3000 wont
Sounds like the battery, had similar problems.. if you purchase a new battery make sure you get the right kind there are two types, an 8 cell or 12 cell..
The fix for my pressario involved completely stripping it and soldering 3 pins on the power connector on the mainboard.. not difficult but no mean feat.. now works perfectly (with the inclusion of a 12cell battery)

My Presario R3000 battery has been losing charge very quickly so I started running on AC power. Now there is a problem w/ the power cord. Bought a new battery and plugged into charge. The battery showed 100% but keeps shutting off.
when i plug in my compaq r3000, the task bar reads battery in critical stage and the power goes off. if you unplug in and plug in again the battery charging indicator starts blinking.
have you ever had trouble plugging your power supply and the battery
charge indicator not coming on. I first thought the charge sensor in my
battery was shot, that my battery was old and in need of replacement.
It would hold a 1.5 to 2 hour charge but if I didn't plug in the power
supply, hold it in firmly for a second, then stablize the cord, the
charge battery indicator would flicker off... I think now that I have a
short in the connector but when I get inside, the connector wires are
on the underside and not visible for inspection or repair.
same here,3yr old laptop
