My Presario R3000 battery has been losing charge very quickly so I started running on AC power. Now there is a problem w/ the power cord. Bought a new battery and plugged into charge. The battery showed 100% but keeps shutting off.

when i plug in my compaq r3000, the task bar reads battery in critical stage and the power goes off. if you unplug in and plug in again the battery charging indicator starts blinking.

have you ever had trouble plugging your power supply and the battery
charge indicator not coming on. I first thought the charge sensor in my
battery was shot, that my battery was old and in need of replacement.
It would hold a 1.5 to 2 hour charge but if I didn't plug in the power
supply, hold it in firmly for a second, then stablize the cord, the
charge battery indicator would flicker off... I think now that I have a
short in the connector but when I get inside, the connector wires are
on the underside and not visible for inspection or repair.

It could be that your battery is defective/worn out. If the computer just shuts off immediately (doesnt try to hibernate/standby) then you're likely looking at replacing the battery. They can suddenly do things like this if a cell shorts out in the battery or due to common wear. But first, here are a couple of things you can try.

1. Try reseating the battery (pull it out and put it back in). Sometimes something that simple can fix the problem.
2. Try to calibrate the battery. Your computer may come with instructions on how to do this, but if not you can do it manually. Turn the computer on but go into BIOS (press F10 at the compaq logo screen). Don't load your operating system
Unplug your computer. If it turns off at this point, your battery is already toasted. Replace it.
If the computer keeps running, let it go until it finally shuts off due to battery drain. Then plug it back in and let it recharge completely. This will let the microchip in the battery learn its charge potential and may allow you to get more life out of it.

Note: Calibrating these batteries is good practice but it shouldn't be done very often. If your calibration doesn't work after 1 or 2 tries, you probably still are looking at a dead battery.

SOURCE: my compaq presario r3000 wont

Sounds like the battery, had similar problems.. if you purchase a new battery make sure you get the right kind there are two types, an 8 cell or 12 cell..

The fix for my pressario involved completely stripping it and soldering 3 pins on the power connector on the mainboard.. not difficult but no mean feat.. now works perfectly (with the inclusion of a 12cell battery)

Computer wont charge the light comes on every few mins for about a min then goes off i can turn it on but only stays on a few mins i have a compaq presario r3000

The lithium batteries that laptops use have a 3 year lifespan. If you have had the battery for that amount of time then you have reached the end of it's life cycle. Most manufacturers build in a warning message that will pop up to let you know that you have reached that time frame and it is time to change the battery. If your battery is not that old then you have an issue either with the battery itself or the charging system built into the laptop. The only way to identify what the problem is would be to switch out the battery to another laptop and see if it would charge properly. If you do not have any access to the same model of laptop that you are currently using then the other choice would be to take your unit into your local HP-Compaq repair center. Usually the batteries are warranted for as long as the original warranty period on your laptop. The warranty would not cover the life cycle. If age is the problem then your only recourse is to buy another battery.

Compaq R3000 new battery but does not work

Make sure you have the right AC Adapter hooked up to charge the battery with.

If you do then its a problem with the motherboard. If your using an offbrand ac adapter then that could be the culprit.

r u mention for battery light?if is it true, then the light is blinking because of your laptop want to make sure the power supply charge that battery.if it is in charging condition, the light on.but if the light goes off, that mean, the battery is already full.

But when u use adaptor without battery, the light will goes off because no charging session is in progress which has same behaviour with battery full(during battery full,no charging session occur)

The power plug won't charge the battery which prevents the computer coming on

There was a recent class settlement agreed to by HP regarding these models. HP failed to notify a ton of its customers and I've contacted Scott Kamber regarding.. (We were consultants for the suit).. Weve repaired a ton of these and you are not alone. Did you buy the machine new and register w/HP? Just curious...

Battery won't charge

If the battery is not charging, then the charging circuit of the motherboard is bad.

Page 3-22 lists the spare part number for the motherboard. (4 versions depending on options)

Compaq Presario R3000 series charging/powering problem

Your power jack on the laptop is probably what when bad. you can take it apart and try to install an new one or you can power the laptop through the side docking port. I wired up a custom connector to use with the ac adapter to make it connect to the to wide metal slots in the docking port.
