Question about Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

All External storage devices "USB Device Not Recognized"

Windows XP - After using an intermittent USB extension cord with a flash drive, when I connect any external storage device driectly to a USB port I get "USB Device not recognized" "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned." In Device Manager under USB it shows an unknown device. External hard drive does not show up in disk drives in device manager. I tried uninstalling all USB items in Dev Mgr, they reinstall but still get same message for flash and ext hard drive. Other devices work fine in the same USB ports. I tried System Restore. No luck. HELP!! Thanks!

Dear Sir,madam
You have to do some steps about fixing this problem :
1: Go to Device manager by right click on my computer then manage and then device manager.
2: Go to universal serial bus controller and export it.
3: in each USB root hub right click and then properties.
4: In properties screen select power management tab and unmark on " allow the computer to turn off this device to save power ".
5: After finishing this steps in each USB root hun restart your computer and then done

I'm trying to sync an apple ipod shuffle 4th generation to my windows xp pc. The famous USB device not recognized thing pops up. What do i need to do so i can use and sync my ipod.


Shutdown Windows.
Turn the computer off.
Unplug the AC power cord.
Reconnect the AC power cord.
Restart the PC.
This will eliminate many "intermittent" problems.

Now, connect some other USB device (mouse? keyboard? memory-stick?) into the USB port, to confirm that the USB port is working, at least for some USB device.

Now, connect the iPod to one of the USB ports.
If it is not recognized, connect the iPod to a different USB port.

This should work.

Not recognized in "my computer" when plugged in


An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

Hi, im having problem with my windows usb it cannot be detected by my windows xp.. in the device manager the mass storage device is marked (x) on it. what would i do to make this functional on my...


First of all try changing the usb port you are using I am sure that there will be more than one usb ports in your PC. After this try using another similar USB device.
I mean if you are trying to plug in a Flash drive use a different one or If you are trying to connect an external Hard Disk (as it is obvious from the mass storage device marked with an x as you have pointed out). Try using a different External Hard Disk that you may borrow from someone checks will help you locate the problem. The reason why your USB device is not being detected by your PC must be the driver of the USB drive is out dated. Check the version of the USB Is it 2.0? or the driver might have been corrupt.

You cannot use a pendrive as RAM in a computer or laptop, but you can use the pendrive as an external USB storage drive/device.
