Oreck XL9100 Brush clogged with hair

Does anyone know how to dismantle the brush for the Oreck vacuums? They appear to be the same for the newer models. I've had to replace several brushes due to hair, or whatever, clogging up the brush so it won't turn. I've tried getting a pocket knife in there but it won't really get the hair that's hidden and stopping the brush from turning freely.

My brush does not appear to be clogged by anything, but it is not spinning when the vacuum is running and thus it is harder to push the vacuum. Any ideas as to what the problem could be?

The pulley will turn off, then the end will pull off. Some of the replacement brush rolls, the pulley may be pressed on and may or may not come off with out ruining the end.

Vacuum not sucking up debris.

HI, it's Jim from Crucial Vacuum!

Here are some general vacuum maintenance tips that will help out with your Oreck vacuums loss of suction. After applying these solutions you should see an improvement in your vacuums suction.

Lets check out your brush roll. Look for any noticeable debris, and be sure to manually rotate the brush roll to unearth any hidden clogs. If you see carpet fibers, or strands of hair remove these with a razor.

After every use, make sure to empty your unit's dust cup. Allowing for fine dust and debris to rest in your unit's dust cup for a long period may cause your unit to become clogged, which leads to poor or even no suction.

Another area to check is your vacuums hose. Stretch it out as far as you can to see of any clogs. If there is a clog in a hard to reach spot try using a broom handle to unclog it.

It is recommended to wash and clean your unit's filter weekly. To do so, empty your filter screen outdoors to take off any excess debris and then clean under running water until the water comes out clean. Allow the filter screen to fully dry before inserting it back into the unit. This may take up to several hours.

Is the belt intact? After usage the belt will stretch out and lessen the tension on the brush roll. This could be causing the brush roll to have a lack of resistance against it. You want to be sure the belt is on there nice and tight.

Oreck brush only turns a tiny bit and belt pulley get hot belt not turning much either

If your brush is not turning properly then you need to check the bearing ends to see if there is any hair, string, or thread wound around the brush shaft. If there is and you can remove it, that might fix your problem otherwise I would suggest getting a new brush roller.

Oreck brush only turns a tiny bit and belt pulley get hot and smells bad

Sounds like you probably have a brush issue since it does not turn very much. I would pull the brush and take the bearings off each end if you can and look to see if there is a build up of hair or string around the bearing shaft. If you see that and can clean that out that might help. If you cannot get to the bearings you may just have to purchase a new brush roller.

Oreck magnesium keeps shutting off

Need to check your brush roller to see if it is spinning. Turn the vacuum over and turn it on. If the brush spins before it shuts off, you may need to check the bearings to see if any strings or hair has built up around the brush bearing shafts and is causing the brush to spin slower. If the brush does not spin, you have a broken belt and you will need to replace it. The Magnesium has a sensor that looks for the brush to spin at a certain speed and if it does not, it will shut down. Hope this helps!

Suction problem

Probably have a clog some where in the base and that is what causes it to throw stuff back out.

My Oreck XL has quit sucking. The brush turns but

Same problem here with XL9100. Bag would not expand implying no suction. Motor ran and brushes turned. Easy disassembly using common tools found that a plastic bag had been sucked up and caused a blockage prior to the impeller. Cleaned up, reassembled, and everything worked fine after that.

Oreck upright hard to push

If hard to push, only a few things to check:

(1) Rear wheels will get hair or thread wrapped around axles, dust, etc. and be hard to turn. Make sure each wheel turns easily.

(2) Small wheels on newer models (since about 1997-98) toward front are worn, missing or have same problem as item 1.

(3) Brush roll not turning. The brush roll actually helps pull this unit along the floor, as it rotates in the "forward" direction. If the belt broke, and you do not realize it, it may suddenly seem harder to push.

Brush doesn't rotate

If the brush don't rotate.the first thing you need to do is check to make sure there is nothing jammed in the brush.Like a piece from a carpet,or hair.If it still don't work.then you need to change the belt inside the vacuum itself.

My Oreck XL was working fine, then when I vacuumed a shag rug is started smoking and smelled like something is burning. (I changed the bag, checked for clogs--none found, and roller brush is turning. It...

Even though the brush is spinning, the belt is probably worn out and stretched. when you vacuum the shag carpet, it puts more drag on the brush. try running it on a shorter carpet or hard floor for a few minutes. if it doesn't smoke, then you know it's your belt. if it does smoke, then it's probably the motor burning up.
