hey, if the machine boots into windows but doesnt show the cdrom drive in my computer, might be you have had norton on in the past theres a common fault that makes the drive disappear, the fix is on this page http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww-secure.symantec.com%2Fnorton-support%2Fjsp%2Fhelp-solutions.jsp%3Fdocid%3D20090430144107EN%26lg%3Denglish%26ct%3Dunited%2Bstates%26product%3Dhome%26version%3D1%26pvid%3Df-home%26entsrc%3Dredirect_pubweb&h=jAQEyPa4V

if the drive aint showing in the bios, make sure you have the jumper on the drive set correctly to either slave or master depending on how its cabled. hope this helps ;)

My PowerBook G4 does not recognize internal hard drive. when i boot without cd it will not boot and i will see a question mark on the screen and a small icon that represent mac os. i have Mac OS X 10.3...

If you plugged this into a PC and formatted it you probably formatted it with NTFS or another Microsoft file format. This will not be recognized by a Mac. You will need to pop the hard drive back into your Mac and boot to the installation CD. From here you will need to go into disk utility and reformat the drive with a GUID Mac Extended format partition. If you open disk utility and the drive doesn't show up you probably have an issue with the drive controller on the logic board.

I hope this helps! If this did help you, please give a thumbs up!

Thank you for choosing FixYa!

I recover the operating system with hp recovery system, but once completed and restart the netbook, my hp mini 2140 never managed to come in and just boot windows back and forth. then I did the hard disk...

Go into the BIOS by pressing f10 when powering on the laptop.

Go to System Configuration and choose Device Configuration

Scroll down to SATA Native Mode and disable.

Press f10 to save configuration. The computer should reboot and press f9 to select boot device.

See if the 160GB hdd is now showing as an option. If it is then you are in luck.

p.s: You may need to update the BIOS to the latest if it still does not show up for you.

My laptop crashed and we installed a new hard drive, as HP said, but we received a message that it did not recognize operating system. So we ordered recovery disks and put those in turned it on, still no...

ok, First you should understand the new hard drive is empty, it is not even formatted. At this point the most likely issue is the bios not recognizing the Hard Drive because the Bios is not set to automatically detect the hard drive. Enter the Bios and go to the hard Drive selection sub menu and have the computer automatically detect the hard drive size and type. Then go to the boot sequence menu and alter the boot order to CDROM, Floppy (If you have one), Hard Drive, Network. Reboot the computer and you should see the RAM test, hard Drive Identification and then the CDROM should start to boot. I can't be more specific about the steps because your post didn't include the model of the laptop. All of this assumes your CDROM is still in working order since HP laptops have a known issue with CDROM's going out for no reason. The hard way for dealing with this would be to get an encloser to put a hard drive in to make it portable and connect to another computer and do the partitioning and formatting of that new drive on the other computer and solve the problem that way.

Motherboard won't recognize SATA DVD drive.

make the dvd your 1st priority in bios for boot, if it cannot be recognized try taking the floppy cable out of the floppy drive, maybe you have a problem with your power supply

Normally you would set it up to boot from:
1. CD/DVD drive
2. Hard Drives

There may also be a floppy drive to add in whereever you want it.
This problem sound like some kind of drive controller or the drives are not being recognized in BIOS...check and make sure you see the hard drives when setting the boot order.
