If I am not mistaken the EL1197 is the ink roller type. It has the red/black and it's the IR40T. If that's the one replace the ink roller. If it's a ribbon type then replace the ribbon. It's about $5. Email me if there is any problem
If printing is blurry even when the ink roller is in the proper position, replace the roller. Ink roller: Type EA-732R

1) Turn the power off. 2) Remove the printer cover. (Fig. 1) 3) Remove the ink roller by turning it counterclockwise and pulling it upward. (Fig. 2) 4) Install the new ink roller and press it in the correct position. Make sure that the ink roller is securely in place. (Fig. 3) 5) Put back the printer cover.

Yes you can. That type of calculator has two separate ink rollers, one black & one red. They are easy to remove by putting your finger around the little ink roller & sliding it out towards you, the new one will lightly click into place. You can buy the sharp brand of ink rollers or a generic brand that will fit your calculator.
If you remove the clear plastic cover from over the printer you will see the print head. With the power off if you gently push the print head it will move left/right. Notice that the top of the print head moves. There should be a small tab on the left side of the top - mine has 'pull up' embossed on it. The print roller is fixed on its underside. So yes it can be replaced, if you can find a new one
