I may have the same problem with mine, I can still see the picture, but it is all red. Could I just need to chage the CRT fluid in the blue and green? I change the fluid on a similar tv and doing so took care of the white halo's. When I go into the red convergance, I can see the cross, but when I go into the blue all I can see is a light blue blob..... Makes me thing the the fluid is contaminated. Also don't have any sound, but I don't think that those two problems are related.

Fixing the picture in my Philips rear projection tv

As far as mostly red--turn color to zero and examine screen--if not gray or black and white it may need the screen controls adjusted.

Dark---with back cover off clean the three lens this model has--they are the light source for your picture and if dusty picture will be darker and somewhat dull looking.

Answer is based on brand/model number listed here.

Can I get instructions on how to change out the different color coolants for the philips magnavox 55p8341 rear projection tv?

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

I have color issues no matter how i adjust the color it stays an orange color

You have fluid in all 3 of your picture tubes on that model and the fluid in the Blue and Green has become contaminated just from usage and age. A technician usually charges about $250.00 to 300.00 to replace it. The Red very seldom ever goes bad because it runs the coolest in the spectrum. After that, you'll be good as new.

Need the default coloring for the Philips 55P8341 tv

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get a convergenece repair kit with instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2
Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

Color adjust

Greetings!

Adjusting the picture tubes is a scary proposition, but since you have already done it...
The easiest way to balance the gray scale is to turn the color all the way down on the set. The next part is easier with two people if the screen controls are on the back of the set. This is the part you saw that has six small knobs on it. There are control for the focus of the red, gree and blue and for the screen level of the red, green and blue. You will want to adjust the screen controls in an effort to get the picture black and white (this is why you turn the color down), hence the term "gray scale". Just make slight adjustments, take your and be patient. It will take some time, but you will get your picture balanced back out in time.

Hope this helps!

Philips 9P6040C 60 in. Rear projection

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Here are some of the most common symptoms.
  • Screen looks 3D
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed in but stationary.
Solution:

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site http://www.TvRepairKits.com . They have put together a kit for your exact model. The kit includes a photo instruction guide, original Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, etc. Everything you need to fix it yourself.

Hope this helps,

Philips projection tv

Sounds like the red CRT is defective. But could be the red drive circuit also. If you turn the color level to zero is the picture red or black and white. If the red/orange is still there i would suggest its the red CRT. I have a source for Phillips CRTs that cost 135.00 with free shipping. If you end up needing one let me know and I will post the link.
