Question about Singer 7462 Mechanical Sewing Machine

1 Answer

I have a Singer 401 A sewing machine. Nylon material will not move across the foot plate when I am sewing. The tension of the foot seems good. It was working then all of a sudden it stopped moving. I have gone through the manuel and could not find out what could have caused this to happen.

I had been sewing routinely with this machine without a problem, until now.  Thanks.  Bdowl

To prepare material to start - iron a turnover? Pull through foot? Etc.

By saying the tension of the foot is good I take it you mean the pressure is set good. Maybe add more pressure. Are you sure that the lever on the bottom right is set for sewing and not darning which raises the needle plate above the feeddogs? Sure that your feed dogs are moving well at the stitch length set. With slippery fabrics you may need to try a different type of foot. There are some plastic or teflon coated ones that will not stick to or hold the material back. Or try a Walking Foot or Even Feed foot which will move the top of the fabric evenly with the bottom.
They do help alot.
Good luck

How to thhread my singer fm22

Rhonda: According to eHow. com: " Instructions
    • 1 Plug the power cord for the Singer FM-22 into the wall power outlet.
    • 2 Turn the wheel on the right of the machine toward you until the take-up lever on the front is in the highest position. Raise the presser foot releasing the tension discs. Put the thread spool onto the horizontal spool bar and lock the spool in place with the cap. Run the thread through the thread guidepost on the top of the machine, to the guidepost on the front, down through the tension discs, up into the take-up lever and down into the guidepost on the needle shaft. Thread the needle and pull until there is a 2-inch lead.
    • 3 Press the power switch so the upper portion is pressed in. The 'I' means on and the 'O' means off.
    • 4 Place material under the presser foot and lower the presser foot setting the tension and holding the fabric in place on top of the feed dog. The feed dog is the metal plate under the needle where the material is feed through the machine.
    • 5 Lightly step on the foot controller to begin sewing. Go slowly until you are comfortable with the speed of the machine.
    • 6 Practice changing the stitch type and moving the cloth along with the feed dog.

How to set singer machine for strechy fabric

Hello, Most often if the machine sews fine on a regular material, cotton, denim, ect.....then the material...in this case "stretchy" is moving up and down with the needle...this is called "flagging" the material moves ever so slightly and this cause the hoop that the hook would pick up to be either not the right size or just a fraction out of line with the travel of the hook. On most industrial machines you can increase the presser foot pressure and cure it. From time to time the size of the hole in the middle of the presser foot can allow movement... so you might try applying a sturdy tape or material to the under side of the foot in order to reduce the hole side.

Hope this helps!!

Singer inspiration. When using zipper foot. Excess amount of thread on bottom of material, very loose and loopy. Wasting alot of thread for such a some task.

Your top threading is not right, check to make sure that your thread hasn't jumped out of a guide. Totally rethead with the presser foot up, now pull thread, it should move smoothly, next put the presser foot down, the thread should barely move. This will seat your thread in the tension discs. If, that does not work, insert a new needle.

Thread tangles on the underside of the material being sewed the top seems normal, but the bottom of the material I am sewing becomes a tangled mess. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a threading problem. Thread the machine all the way to the needle but not in the needle eye and make sure you have the presser foot up. Then pull on the thread and move the presser foot up and down. You should have tension when it is down and no or very little when it is up. If this is not the case you did not get the thread in the tension disk or your machine needs a adjustement. try this and let me no if it fix the problem.

I just received a singer 4205 (inspiration) and the presser foot does not move back and forth to pull the material through the machine. It seems to be stuck. I am not a seamstress, but 3 other people...

It is not your presser foot, you must mean the feed dogs, they are what moves the fabric along. Clean and Lubricate your machine. Remove the bobbin case and clean it out. Replace your needle now Totally rethread the machine, according to your manual. Test the threading by putting the presser foot up, pull on top thread, it should pull smoothly, now put your presser foot down, the thread should barely move. This will seat the thread in the tension discs. By the way, try your tension on 3. Also, make sure that your presser foot is down before sewing. Always move the handwheel towards you, never away from you because you will mess up the timing. You will see your feed dogs move if you watch. Download a free copy of you manual at www.singerco.com and save it, plus enlarge the diagrams. If, that does not do the trick call Singer at 1-800-4singer.

What type of material are your trying to sew? If it is stretchy, or thin put some gift wrap tissue paper under it to stabilize it. Also, adjust your tension to about 2 or 3. Now check your needle, put a fresh one in, maybe a 9 or 11. Do not use old thread, either because it breaks easy. Try this, I hope that it works for you. You can buy stabilizer, pellon but tissue paper is what we used years ago, sometimes even computer paper. Good luck.

Under the material I see nots

It is usually in your top threading. Try this test, with the presser foot up, pull on the thread, it should feed smoothly, now put the presser foot down, pull thread, and it should barely move. Sometimes that seats the threads in the tension discs. Good luck

I'm a newbie trying to learn how to sew on a 401 singer. My first problem is thread tension. Can't seem to get it right and the second problem is the bobbin won't sit right. I'm sure the problems are...

Are following these instructions? http://www.sewusa.com/Threading_Diagrams/Threading_Pages/Singer_Sewing_Machine_Threading/singer_401_threading_diagram.htm

Note: always thread a sewing machine with the presser foot up and make sure the bobbin thread is feeding from the bobbin as indicated in the manual.

Tension is usually around 4.

You need the right bobbin for this model: Class 66.
