Question about Dishwashers

1 Answer

We use our dishwasher daily. However, we have noticed when we have not used it over a series of days water is gathering in the bottom of the dishwasher and leaks onto the floor. We are able to drain the water by pushing the drain button on the front of the dishwasher. Any suggestions for issue/repair? The dishwasher is a Kenmore.

Hello, Welcome to FixYa ! The problem you're experiencing based on your description sounds like (unfortunately) a common one. The water inlet valve can be an issue with dishwasher's if they fail in the open position or some debris is holding it open slightly within the valve body, hence allowing water to gradually fill it and overflow. It'll need to be replaced likely, but you can try to fix it. You can remove the water line and remove the valve and try to clean it's usually futile, but worth a try. Unfortunately I've seen some pretty serious damage over the years in extreme cases when left unchecked for several days...or longer. You may want to call in a pro however, the part to repair it is available at most brick & mortar appliance part centers or you can check out on-line vendors such as "" "" or "" etc. Do a search by typing in your actual model number and you should find it. Hope that helps move you forward. Let me know if I you need help on how to change it etc. **It's relatively easy with Whirlpool built Kenmore or any other for that matter. First Turn off the power, the water, safety first...access is gained through the kick plate/toe panel below the door.** The valve will be on the left and involves only removing 2 screws, the water line in & out and 2 wires which go on either way...they aren't polarity specific. Should resemble this image... We use our dishwasher daily. - 09ade06.jpg Thanks for coming to "FixYa" for your inquiries. Let me know how you make out or if you require further assistance. Good luck. macmarkus :)

Check for obstructions inside in the bottom first and or the pump might be clogged. If it's not some type of obstruction or clog it is likely your motor has died or is almost dead. Start planning on replacing your dishwasher. I suggest to go with a higher end brand. Kitchenaid Superba EQ, Electrolux Wave-Touch, Bosch 800 Series for example.

Take a long shot. Say your mains leak a little, quite possible, and you machine's inlet solenoid valve leaks a bit, say about a litre a day - you probably would not notice it during the normal course of events, in a week it would leak about 7 litres into the machine, in the second week it would have about 14 litres in it, about at the level of the door and not seen by the house visitor. The next week it would leak another 7 litres - all over the floor. Now it would be noticed?

stainless steel will not smell or rust that why its used, the cause of the smell is twofold 1 dirty dishes should not be left unwashed in the machine to long a bectearia starts to grow within a couple of hours and starts the smell process,2the filter system at the bottom of the machine should be checked everyday [heavy user]light use every [2/3 days],the screen at the bottom of the machine is the filters, some models do leave some water in the bottom.adrian,,,,,

Water gathering on top of fridge like water droplets i have to dry it up every other day

Check to make sure that your seal is tightly fitting. Do this by taking a piece of paper and close the door on it near the seal around the door. You shouldn't be able to pull it out. If you can, replace the door seal. There's too much moisture from a bad seal. Hope this helps.

My GE dishwasher is leaking water from the bottom of the machine

first check to make sure door gasket is ok, if bad, replace and test. Make sure to remove bottom front panel during a test and inspect the motor and motor gaskets. It may be leaking here, replace leaking components as needed.

Sound like the hot water sonenoid is stuck in the open position. Locate this solenoid and tap it lightly with a small hammer while the hot water is open. If it does not stop it will beneficial to have this part replaced. I hope this will help.
