We have a 2008-model MacBook that has two cracks on the keyboard cover/bezel near the handwrest and near the left edge. This was repaired earlier under the AppleCare warranty. The cracks have returned with the new bezel, however. The laptop is now out of warranty, unfortunately. Suggestions?

Hi,
This problem is a design error, where the offset spacer is forced down onto the unsupported top case, and eventually they snap along the front edge. Apple acknowledged the problem and started doing free replacements.
I was lucky enough to have a good Apple shop nearby, and they replaced my top cover for free, and I was 18 months out of warranty. It's a design error and therefore not only covered by warranty, although Apple says that it's a decision for the individual store manager.
Once you get your replacement, the trick is not to carry the closed laptop with one hand, along the front edge. Hold it with two hands, and along the rear edge. Not great, but there you go.

Go to the Apple store and state your case about having it repaired under warranty, since it was a design flaw and how the repaired case is showing the same symptoms. Based upon how good the tech is feeling that day, they may replace it again for you. Its hit or miss for some reason. Some folks get white glove treatment even when their out of warranty and some folks get white glove treatment, but with the back of the hand and a boot in the rear. Once the top case is replaced I would recommend getting a keyboard cover to place between the screen and top case as this will dampen the blow and reduce cracks.

Replace lcd on gateway NV57h77u

I disagree. The procedure is so easy no Service Manual is needed

1) Remove ALL power. Remove the AC adapter, and Battery.

2) Open the laptop.

The plastic frame in front of the LCD screen is the Display Bezel.
(Gateway? Believe they call it the LCD Panel Bezel)

Down in the BOTTOM corners, next to the Hinges, are screws to be removed. One in each bottom corner.

There are Screw Covers over these screws. The Screw Covers need to be removed.
Little round covers I believe to be made of plastic.
(Some models they are made of synthetic rubber)

I use a computer pick to Gently remove them.
Some use the tip of an X-Acto knife. I do not recommend this as there is a possibility of injury.
Perhaps a large darning needle. (Needle you sew with, but is Large in size)

Pick up at one edge of Screw Cover. Screw Covers are held on by a type of rubber cement.
I LIGHTLY stick them to the Display Bezel for safekeeping.

(Yes. They like to stick to the tool, your fingers, and it seems passing jets in the sky.
If you are careful with them, you should be able to reuse them.
If they do not stick anymore, use a toothpick, and apply a TINY dab of rubber cement to them/it )

Once the Screw Covers are removed use a No.1 Philips screwdriver, or equivalent Jewelers screwdriver; to remove the 2 screws.

The Display Bezel has TABS going around the exterior perimeter, of it's inside edges.
These Tabs snap into matching LATCHES on the Display Cover.

You can come from the Outside edge, where the Display Bezel meets the Display Cover, and use a thick guitar pick.

The guitar pick is wedged into the parting line, of where the Display Bezel meets the Display Cover.

Once a 'crack' is formed in-between the two, then the fingertips are used to gently start popping the bezel from the cover.

You slowly go along with your fingertips, and work along the top, then sides. By the time you have both sides almost loose, the Display Bezel usually pops off.

I like the flex method.
Come to the inside edge of the Display Bezel.
Where it meets the LCD screen. I suggest start on the Right side/Middle.

Use a fingertip, and lift up the inside edge of the Display Bezel up a little. Can't lift up at that spot? Move over. You are at a Tab/Latch.

With this spot lifted up a little, use the fingertip of the other hand, and slide under next to it.
Now use your fingertips as wedges, and pop the Display Bezel loose a little at a time.

I start at the Right side/Middle as stated. Left hand fingertips go DOWN the right side, Right hand fingertips go UP the right side.
Then I go across the Top, and down the Left side.

MOST of the time, as stated; the Display Bezel usually pops off when right side, and left side are most of the way popped loose.
NOT always though!

Sometimes you have to pop EACH and EVERY Tab/Latch loose.

Also; watch around the Hinge area/s.
Display Bezel can get hung up around them.
Go slow, and gently work the Display Bezel off, around the Hinge areas.

Display Bezel popped off, sit back; relax. You just did the hard part.
Wasn't so tough, huh?

This is what the Display Bezel looks like removed,

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gateway-NV57H15U-LCD-Front-Bezel-15-6-AP0HJ00021-/171020787909?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27d1a220c5

The MAIN view shown is a BACK view.
In the smaller views underneath, the 4th view from the Left, shows the FRONT view.

If you SET your mouse cursor in the middle of the Main view photo, the Zoom In feature is enabled.
You can CLICK on any of the smaller views, to make them appear as a Main view.

You can also see that the Hinge Covers, are an integral part of the Display Bezel. Shows you that when removing the Display Bezel, these Hinge Covers may need to be worked off of the Hinges.

Of course, may not; as I have previously stated.

The LCD screen is an Assembly. It is composed of layers.
These layers are kept in the factory set alignment, by a metal Screen Frame.
The Screen Frame resembles a picture frame.

There are THREE screws on each side of the Screen Frame.
These screws (Philips) go through metal Brackets, and hold the LCD screen/Screen Frame; to the Display Cover.

The Brackets are an integral part of the Hinges,

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gateway-NV55-NV57-LCD-Left-Hinge-Rail-Bracket-AM0HJ000100-/400334888754?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5d35d19f32

On EACH side, there is 1 screw towards the Top, 1 screw towards the Bottom/Middle, and 1 screw towards the Bottom.

Remove all 6 screws.

At the Top is the Webcam Cable. Unplug it from the Webcam Module.
(Cable pulls to LEFT side, facing laptop)

The TOP of the LCD screen is now tilted forward.
The Video Cable plugs into the Bottom side.

There should be a piece of clear Mylar tape, holding the Video Cable connector in place. Carefully peel it back, unplug the Video Cable from the LCD screen.

Remove the LCD screen.

Reverse steps to install new LCD screen.

Acer aspire laptop screen problem.looks like ink burst behind screen

Suggest you replace the LCD screen, pearlboslem. It is damaged.

If you post the Acer Aspire model number, I can find replacement LCD screens for your perusal, and should be able to find a Service Manual. (Free)
I will also guide you step by step the best I can.

This is on the Bottom of the laptop in a white Service Tag.

If you have never replaced an LCD screen in a laptop, the task may look daunting.
I assure you it isn't.

Generally the plastic strip that is above the Keyboard, and below the LCD screen, is removed.
Usually the Power On button, and LED indicator lights are in this plastic strip.
Different manufacturers have different names for this strip of plastic.
LED Cover, Power Button Cover, etc.

With a lot of Acer laptops the LCD screen can simply be accessed by removing the Display Bezel, and the plastic strip does not have to be removed.
(Some laptops do not have a plastic strip)

In the front of the LCD screen, and surrounding the LCD screen, is a thin plastic frame.
This is the Display Bezel.

Most display bezel's have rubber screw covers, going around the front of the bezel.
These are gently picked off with a computer pick, or suitable tool.
They have a type of rubber cement on them, and if careful, they can be reused.
(Stuck back into place)

The screws are just Philips head screws. Once removed the Bezel is slightly flexed, and popped off.

{The outside edges of the Bezel have tabs. Plastic protrusions formed out of the Bezel itself.
These tabs mate up with mating tabs in the Display Cover. The top cover of the laptop.

The tips of the fingers are put on an inside/middle edge of the Bezel, and used to gently ease this inside edge up a little. (Care is used so that fingernails do not touch/scratch the LCD screen)

With the inside/middle edge brought up enough to insert a second finger, the second finger slides down, and eases up on the inside edge again.

The tabs will start popping loose. The procedure is to keep moving along the inside edge with your finger tips, and keep popping the tabs loose. Once you are 1/2 way around, or so, the Bezel will pop free.

Some bezels do not have screws. The Bezel is flexed as above, so it is distorted, and the tabs pop free }

Once the Bezel is removed you are looking at the LCD screen, and how it is fastened to the Display Cover.

The LCD screen is an assembly. It is composed of layers. The layers are held in place by a screen frame. A thin metal frame that resembles a picture frame.

Usually on the left, and right side of the screen frame are metal brackets.
These are attached to the screen frame with two to four screws.
The screws are removed, and the LCD screen assembly is almost ready for removal.
There are cables (Wires) that have to be removed from the LCD screen, the Inverter at the bottom of the LCD screen, and maybe wireless antenna wires.

This gives you an idea on replacing an Acer LCD screen. Different models are shown.
Along with a pictorial guide, I may be able to find a Service Manual also,

Click on this for the full article on that model of laptop.

You can click on each photo shown to enlarge it.

Just to show you how relatively easy it is to replace an LCD screen, in an Acer laptop.

Post the Model Number, and I'll give you more exacting information.

How to remove the keyboard

Keyboards become worn out over time. Individual keys can become damaged, become less sensitive to key strokes, or disengage from the keyboard. Keyboards can also become corroded from spills. Many keyboards on HP laptops can be replaced. Hewlett-Packard has made hundreds of different laptop models. Each model may require slightly different steps for replacing the keyboard. To locate a replacement keyboard, you can contact HP directly or another online or offline source that sells computer parts.
1.Power off the laptop. Flip the laptop over to access the device's underside.
2.Remove the battery cover and take out the battery.
3.Remove a screw to the left of the memory bay. This screw will be one of two resting in the middle of the underside of the device. You want to remove the right screw, the left screw is attached to the CD/DVD-ROM drive, not the keyboard. (This screw may be red in color.)
4.Flip the laptop back over and raise the laptop screen so you have access to the keyboard area. Insert the tip of a Flathead screwdriver along the bezel and detach it. Carefully pull the bezel up and set it aside. The bezel is connected to the device with a ribbon cable. Do not remove this ribbon cable. (The bezel is the above the laptop and is the cover that houses the power button.) Once the bezel is up, notice the three screws that are beneath it.
5.Unscrew the three screws holding down the keyboard.
6.Lift the keyboard forward toward the mouse area. Be careful, it is still connected to the motherboard by a keyboard cable.
7.Release the cable from the keyboard. Push both ZIF connectors on the side of the cable upwards, toward the laptop screen. Pull the cable from the connector and the keyboard is now released.
8.Insert the keyboard cable of the new keyboard into the ZIF connector. A pair of tweezers may be required to put the cable in place. Lay the keyboard flat down and rescrew in the screws. Replace the bezel cover. Flip the keyboard over and replace the screw on the underside near the memory bay. Insert the battery and battery cover.

The border around my screen has cracked in both lower corners. This is not the actual screen itself, but the metal shiny one around my 2008 MacBook Pro 15 inch. I was wondering how I, myself, could...

Depending on how far the crack goes, you may need just to replace the screen bezel, not a hard job. These go for ludicrous money 2nd hand and I enclose an example I found that would fit your laptop
(fix ya please note, I'm not promoting ebay)

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MACBOOK-PRO-15-A1150-SCREEN-DISPLAY-BEZEL-SURROUND-/220816629778?pt=UK_Computing_Apple_Mac_Accessories&hash=item3369b26012

An alternative would be to fill the gap with some epoxy putty (would spoil the look of the Mac but would at least help keep the bezel together)

I cracked my screen on a hp G62-140US notebook. It has no screws so how do i change the screen out? I am out of work and can not afford to take it in for repair. Thank You so much.

The LCD screen is secured to the notebook hinges. To access the LCD screen you need to remove the bezel around the edge of the screen. There are screws hidden behind plastic screw covers. The Bezel may also be secured by retaining clicp and double sided tape.

Screens playing up

Let me give you the link to the free download of the Service Manual, for the Compaq Evo n1010v series of Notebook PC's, to start,

http://freelaptopmanuals.com/compaq_evo_laptop_manuals.html

In the list scroll down to -
Compaq Evo n1010v Series, and left-click on it.

This is a PDF file download. (The computer you are using now has Adobe Reader on it, which uses PDF files)

After you click on the above file name, you will be looking at a blank screen. The PDF file is downloading in the background.

It took me approximately 68 seconds for the first page to come up. I'm using a medium speed DSL connection.

It takes another couple of seconds, then the file will be downloaded all the way.
I just wanted to prepare you for this.

I will lead you through the Service Manual, and will also tell you, in case there is some chance that you cannot download the manual.

On the left side of the manual, the Bookmarks will be open.
Left-click on the + sign next to Removal and Replacement.

Scroll down to - Removing the Display Assembly (Authorized Service Providers Only)

Left-click on this heading.
Or go to Page 38.

Go up to the top header, and Left-click on the + sign to enlarge the view.
(Plus sign to the right of the Blue down arrow. I enlarged to 100%)

1) Common knowledge. When working on a laptop always remove all electrical sources.

Remove the AC adapter (Charger) if plugged in, and remove the Battery.

You should also wear an ESD wrist s-trap when working on a laptop. (Electro Static Discharge)
Your body carries Static electricity, and Static will fry out the delicate computer hardware components.

In this case, you will not be going anywhere near hardware components, that are susceptible to static shock, so you won't need it.

I do advise that you have a multi-compartment container available, for the screws. Some of these screws look alike, but they Aren't.

If you do not have a multi-compartment container handy, you may want to use a clean egg carton in a pinch.
Label each egg holder for the area the screws came out of.

A number 1 Philips screwdriver, and a small Flat-tipped screwdriver, are the only tools you need, but a pair of needlenose pliers would be handy.

2) Remove the Keyboard Cover:

Laptop in the closed position. Turn the laptop so the Back faces you.

There is one Philips head screw for each of the Hinge Covers. Remove these two screws.
Label the container, or egg holder - Hinge Screws

Turn the laptop back around so the front faces you.
Open the laptop, and ease the Display Assembly all the way back, so that it is close to the table.

The Keyboard Cover is the strip of plastic that is above the Keyboard, and right below the Display Assembly.
The Power On button, One Touch buttons, and LED lights are in this cover.

This is the toughest part you will do, is to remove the Keyboard Cover. The Keyboard Cover is made of a space age plastic, so it is tough.
However care is needed when removing it, as it can be broken.

Go to the right side of the Keyboard Cover. The flat-tipped screwdriver is used to remove it.

On the side of the Keyboard Cover you will note that it has a rounded shape.
Come back from this edge towards the middle, about 1 inch. (A finger digit in length)

You will also see that there is a parting line, where the Keyboard Cover meets the body of the laptop.
The flat-tipped screwdriver is inserted into this parting line.

I advise only inserting the tip, about 1/4th inch under the edge of the Keyboard Cover. (Half the length of a fingernail)

Come in from the Keyboard side. You may see a small rectangular notch there also, for placing the tip of the screwdriver.

There are wires underneath, and you can pinch them, or break them, if you go too far.

The flat-tipped screwdriver comes in at an angle, inserts partially under the Keyboard Cover, then the back of the screwdriver is brought down.

Ease this side of the Keyboard Cover up.
Also look at the plastic part of the Keyboard Cover, where it wraps over the Hinge.

You can - Gently pry up on the hinge cover also, to help this side of the Keyboard Cover to come up.

With this side lifted up so far, now go to the other side. Ease it up until you have removed the Keyboard Cover.

3) Close the laptop once more. Turn the laptop so the back faces you.
There are two screws that secure the hinges of the Display Assembly, to the body of the laptop.
One screw for each hinge.
Remove them.

[I didn't have you remove them before, because when you open the laptop, the strain put on the hinge screws is great. I feel it is better using this method]

4) Turn the laptop back around so the laptop faces you. Open the Display Assembly all the way back again.

Remove the two M2 X 4mm screws. One on each side. These screws hold down the Antenna PCA's.
(Flat strips of metal connected to a wire)

Move the Antenna PCA's away from the Display Assembly hinges.

Remove the three M2.5 X 6mm screws from each hinge. Three on each side. Six total.

Note that there is a Grounding strap for the Left hinge.

The Display Assembly is now free.

5) The flat plastic piece that goes around the LCD screen, and is in front, is the Display Bezel. I will refer to as just Bezel, from now on.

There are 6 screw covers on the Bezel.
4 across the top, 2 at the bottom corners.
They are rectangular in shape.

I haven't worked on this particular Compaq Evo model, so I can't tell you if they are hard plastic covers, or just a rubbery flat cover.

I use a small flat tip Jewelers screwdriver to remove them. Just gently pry up on one side.

The rubbery covers are held in place by a glue. Similar to rubber cement.
If you carefully remove them, and keep the sticky side up after removing, a lot of times you can reuse them, without having to use fresh glue.

Once the covers are removed, you will see the philips head screws.
Remove them.

6) The Bezel is snapped into place. The Bezel has plastic protrusions around the edge of it, which fit into notches of the Top Cover of the Display Assembly.

The Bezel removes a lot like the Keyboard Cover did, but a lot easier.

You come in from the outside with a small Flat-tipped screwdriver, into the parting line where the Bezel meets the Top Cover.

Once the Bezel starts easing up, come around with a fingertip on the LCD screen side.
Slip your finger under the edge of the Bezel, and start working your way along, lifting up on the Bezel.

The Bezel comes up, and out with a pop, pop, pop.
Almost sounds like you're breaking something, so i thought I would warn you.

If you are careful, it isn't going to break.

This may explain the procedure better for you,

Also helps show you how to remove the Display Cable from the Inverter. May be different than your Compaq Evo, but the principle still applies.

Macbook goes to sleep and doesn't wake up unless I do a hard reboot.

I have seen this caused by having a mouse plugged into mine. I have removed the mouse and touch the touchpad and it has come up from sleep.

That very well may not be your problem.

Here is the procedure that is recommend from Apple to help with the not waking from sleep problem. I included both methods as it is not clear which macbook you have. I also included the link to the article at the bottom.

The System Management Controller is an integrated circuit (computer chip) that is on the logic board of the computer. As the name implies, it is responsible for power management of the computer. It controls backlighting, hard disk spin down, sleep and wake, some charging aspects, trackpad control, and some input/output as it relates to the computer sleeping.

Over time, the settings in the System Management Controller may become unusable, which can result in operational anomalies with the computer. Examples include not turning on, not waking from sleep, not charging the battery, or not recognizing the AC Adapter, among others.

MacBook (13 inch, Late 2008), MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2008), and MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2008)
  1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
  2. Disconnect the AC adapter and remove the computer's battery.
  3. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
  4. Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.
  5. Press the power button to restart the computer
Note: Starting with MacBook Pro (Late 2008) and MacBook (Late 2008) models, you may instead use the reset method for MacBook Air (below) to reset the SMC. All earlier models of MacBook and MacBook Pro must use the method described above, which involves removing the battery.
MacBook Air and MacBook Pro (Late 2008 and later)
  1. If the computer is on, turn it off by choosing Shutdown from the Apple () menu.
  2. Connect the power adapter to a working power source.
  3. On the built-in keyboard, press (left) Shift-Control-Option along with the power button once.
  4. Wait 5 seconds and press the power button to start the computer.
Note: You must use the keys on the left side of the built-in keyboard.

Anyone replace the inverter on an Acer Aspire 6920?

I haven't replaced an inverter on this model before, but have done on a few other makes.
Generally the inverter is located on the bottom edge of the LCD screen behind the bezel.
The bezel is secured with screws on the front and or the edges of the bezel. these screws in most cases are hidden by small round plastic covers, they need to be carefully peeled off to reveal the screws. Also the bezel is held in place with plastic clips and double sided tape. Slip a thin metal strip between the screen and the bezel and carefully pop the bezel off, start at the bottom edge and work along each edge to release the bezel. Be careful not to scratch the LCD screen and be careful not to apply pressure to the face of the LCD screen otherwise you will crack the LCD screen.
