Try completely disabling the antivirus software, firewall, etc. and see if media player will run. If it does then you answered your own question.

If not go to control panel, add or remove programs, and add or remove windows components, make sure the box for windows media player is checked and click next to reinstall.

(Important: Before uninstalling your McAfee product, please make sure that your Norton is functioning properly and is up-to-date for better protection of your system.)

Are you using free trial version of McAfee virus protection or is it paid?
Here's how you can remove McAfee from your system:
You can remove the application from your system by following the uninstallation steps mentioned below:
For Windows 8 users:
1) Close all McAfee program windows.
2) In the Start screen, type "Programs and Features". (If it is not visible, click "Settings" in the list on the right.)
3) Click "Programs and Features" in the list on the left.
4) Select "McAfee SecurityCenter".
5) Click "Uninstall" and follow any on-screen prompts.
For Windows 7 and Vista users:
1) Close all McAfee program windows.
2) Click "Start", go to "Search", then type "Programs and Features", and click "Go".
3) Double-click "Programs and Features".
4) Select "McAfee Security Center".
5) Click "Uninstall" and follow any on-screen prompts.

For Windows XP users:
1) Close all McAfee program windows.
2) Click "Start", go to "Settings", and then go to "Control Panel".
3) Double-click "Add or Remove Programs".
4) Select "McAfee Security Center".

Windows media player won't work

Which operating system ? Which version of Media player ?
Though designed with Windows 7 in mind, Windows Media Player 11 (WMP 11) is fully compatible with Windows XP.

The trick is knowing which version of WMP 11 to download.
Different versions of the software exist not only for Windows 7, Vista, and XP, but also for both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows XP.

Additionally, WMP 11 is only compatible with XP if it is using Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3. Before downloading the appropriate installation file, you will need to verify which version your system requires.

Open the "Start" menu.
Open "My Computer."

Click "Help", then select "About Windows."
This will display a window with system information.

Find the listing that specifies your Service Pack. If you are operating without Service Pack 2 or 3, you will need to install one (see Resources).

Open the "Start" menu and click "Run." Within the text field, type "winmsd.exe."

Click "OK." Select "System Summary."
Find the heading labeled "Item."

Under this heading should be the word "Processor."
The value associated with "Processor" will determine which version of Windows XP you are running.

If the value begins with "x86," you are running a 32-bit version.
If it begins with "ia64" or "AMD64," then you are running a 64-bit version.

Download the Windows Media Player installation file that matches your version of Windows (see Below).
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/downloads/windows-media-player

Open the file once it has finished downloading.
This will launch the installation wizard.

Follow the onscreen instructions to install WMP 11.
The program should now run normally.
How to Fix Windows Media Center

Windows Media Center is the home entertainment hub on a Windows computer.
With Media Center, you can play live television, songs, DVDs and slideshows.

It is preinstalled on Windows XP Media Center Edition, Windows Vista Home Premium/Ultimate Edition and Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate editions.

From time to time, users run into issues trying to play audio or video files, or with an extender connected to Media Center.

Extenders are devices that allow you to "extend" the Media Center onto a TV screen or larger display.

The Xbox 360 gaming console is an example of an extender.
Launch Windows Media Center from your computer's Start menu.

Scroll down to "Music" on the Media Center home screen.
Select "Music library."

If you find an empty folder under "Music Library," navigate to the folder on your hard drive that stores your music file and add it to Media Center's library.

If the problem isn't an empty folder, look at the file extension on the music file that won't play. Media Center can't play files with unknown or incompatible extensions.

If you find a questionable extension, skip that file. Click once on another file with a different extension, one you know is compatible with Media Center, and then click "Open" to test if you can play that one.

Media Center will play MP3, CDA, WAV and other music file formats.
Open Windows Media Player from the Start menu if you receive a codec error while trying to play either audio or video files.

If you open the file in Media Player, the codec will download automatically.
You should then be able to play the file in Media Center.

Troubleshoot your firewall settings if a Media Center extender doesn't work.
You'll have a problem using an extender if Windows Firewall blocks it.

Go to "Control Panel" from the Start menu and double-click on "Windows Firewall."
Click on "Allow a program or feature through Windows Firewall."

Click to check "Media Center Extenders."
Click on "Apply."

Check external speaker cables to make sure they're connected if you can't hear any sound. Check the computer's volume settings by clicking on the "VOL+" icon at the bottom right corner of the main Media Center screen to make sure the volume is not turned off or down too low.

You may need to reconfigure your speakers if you're having volume or sound issues.
Scroll down to "Tasks" in the Media Center home screen and select "Settings."

Click on "General" and select "Windows Media Center Setup."
Click on "Set Up Your Speakers."

Follow the on-screen prompts to reconfigure your speakers.

I have bought mcafee cd from the store and after i restarted the computer my computer freezes at the windows xp screen. how do i fix this?

Hi
I know this may sound childish but the answer right now is to remove Mcafee. Do this by going into SAFE mode. Press F8 while the computer is rebooting. Once at the SAFE menu select SAFE mode with networking. Once into SAFE mode goto START, Control Panel, Programs and Features. From there uninstall Mcafee. I had you go to the network mode because now you will need to download the Mcafee uninstall tool. This will remove the remaining pieces of Mcafee. Once all this is done go to normal mode and please check to make sure you don't have any other anti virus programs installed - these will definitely mess with Mcafee. If there are no other anti virus programs installed I have to assume it was a virus or malware that interfered with your Mcafee install. Unless you have them already I would suggest you download and then run these programs AVGFREE.exe, MALWAREBYTES.exe and SUPERANTISPYWARE.exe. You can download these from www.download.com. Once these are completed, we know your system is clean, now run the Mcafee install and everything should work fine. Good luck

Flash 9 freezes after 1st. video plays on The Fan.

Lets Start from here:

Before you install Shockwave Player for any Windows browser, uninstall all previous versions.
In order to remove the Shockwave player, simply use the file UNWISE.EXE located in C:\WINDOWS\system32\Adobe\Shockwave 11. Windows users can also use the Add/Remove programs located in the Windows control panel. This will remove the Shockwave 10 player
For the Shockwave 8 and 8.5 there is an uninstaller available from the Web Players page.
Note: All applications must be closed before you run the Shockwave Player uninstaller. Quit all running applications, including all Internet Explorer or other browser windows, and all Instant Messenger clients. Check the Windows system tray carefully to make certain no applications which might possibly use Shockwave Player are still in memory.
After you have removed previous versions, you are ready to download and/or install Shockwave Player.

Before installing Shockwave Player, please check the following browser settings:
Internet Explorer ActiveX settings

Browser security settings should be chosen by you or by your system administrator. For single users who do not have an administrator, the Medium: Default Level allows you to view Shockwave content. For any Custom Level, ensure that both the "Download Signed ActiveX controls" and "Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins" options are set to "Prompt".

To change security level in Internet Explorer:

1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Choose Tools > Internet Options.
3. Select the Security tab.
4. Select Custom Level.
5. Find the section "ActiveX controls and plug-ins".
6. Set ' Download Signed ActiveX Controls' to Prompt.
7. Set 'Run ActiveX Controls And Plug-ins' to Prompt.

If you are having trouble installing, make sure that your Internet Explorer security level is not set to High or to a custom level that does not allow viewing of ActiveX controls.
Computer user permissions

User permissions determine whether or not you are allowed to install ActiveX controls or plug-ins. If you don't have Administrator access to Windows XP SP2, or Vista you may not be able to install Shockwave Player successfully. Administrative privileges are required for the Windows system registry and for the C:\WINDOWS\system32\Adobe\Shockwave folder.
If the ActiveX Control for Shockwave Player fails to install, download the executable installer.

If the information above has not resolved the issue, download the executable Shockwave Player installer here:

* Download and latest Shockwave Player Installer.

Save this installer to your desktop, close out all applications, and run the installer. This may help if you are having trouble with the ActiveX installation from Adobe.com. To confirm that Shockwave Player has installed successfully, please click here. The two movies will show if you have Flash and Shockwave Players installed. The version numbers of the both Players will be displayed in the test movie.
