I would recommend checking for updates for the software on your Ipod touch as if the software on the Ipod is out of date, features may begin to stop working.

If you jailbreak (quickpwn.com) there is an app on cydia that will change it to tap to unlock rather than slide so it should be more sensitive.

Have you validated that the free apps work with the firmware you are currently using? If your iPod had a firmware upgrade, it is very possible that the apps themselves may not work (or may require an update to work).

see if your backlight is low in settings, if not you are just better off getting a new ipod

try to increase the brightness from settings or bring it back to the apple store/ call apple

parts are most likely damaged and would need to be replaced.
