Using a vacuum gauge attached to the intake vacuum port engine running,
look for a air vacuum leak.
too much air coming into the engine= high idle speed it usually doesn't set a code
unless it gets bad.

1996 Toyota Tercel runs at idle fine. When I put it in gear and try to drive it there is a lack of power and backfire.

Check the fuel pressure, check for a cracked air intake hose from the air cleaner. Run a scan for fault codes.

Engine Code P0171 Logged

If Short term # is high while underway, but normal while idling, you could have a scewed maf signal. Sometimes cleaning maf with carb cleaner helps. If no intake leaks are found, and fuel pressure and volume are ok, it could be maf sensor.

rough idle can be caused by vacuum leak, test the lines into the intake, if the dont hold vacuum, follow the line to detect the cause. Also the PCV could be broken and lead to a wrong air mixture. If check engine light is on I would expect lean bank codes...

What revolutions should my 4 litre v6 Hi lux Surf be doing on start up in the morning and how quick should it drop back to normal idle?

concerned about nothing
the ECM sets the high idle rpm on starting so that there is sufficient air / fuel mixture to keep the engine running while it does a tune up and checks all the sensors
when the sensors are all reporting within parameters , the idle speed will drop back
should settle at around 850-900 rpm
as for the fan noise
if you have a viscous fan hub( not electric ) that is the fan locked in high temperature mode and will stay there until the liquid silicon is pumped back into the reservoir
usually takes about 1 minutes and indicates a properly operating fan
as the silicon is being pumped back the fan rpm slows down with a reduction of fan noise
If anything raises your concerns , you have an on board fault recording system that you can access at any time using a scan tool
get in the habit of having the fault codes read at each service or when you feel something is wrong as it will save you lots and lots of cash by not guessing repairs

Hi idle speed for 2001 silverado

The first thing you need to do is to scan your onboard computer network for fault codes. The idle speed is controlled by the computer via the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve. Which is a pulse-width modulated electric motor. If the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) cannot control the idle speed correctly, your check engine light should be coming on (this should be your first clue to get it scanned) and there will be fault codes stored that will be helpful in identifying the cause of the problem. It could be several different causes including a failed IAC, damaged or corroded wire connectors, damaged wiring (rodent damage is pretty common), or even a failed PCM.

On the other hand, there is always the possibility that you simply have a really bad vacuum leak and the high idle speed has absolutely nothing to do with any of the previously mentioned possibilities.

Proper diagnosis and system testing would be required before I could advise you with any accuracy about any definite "fix" for your problem.

Engine fluctuating and cutting out all the time when slowing down to stop cos the revs drop too low

Hi.

If engine revolutions are going up and down even when you are driving, then you have a problem with the EGR valve.

If problem is only when engine is idle, most common fault is the IAC (idle air control) valve, which regulates air when engine is idle. If IAC is OK, check air intake and the sensors installed in the air intake (MAF and IAT). The sensors detect the amount and temperature of air coming into the intake and determine the right amount of air to be mixed with fuel and injected.

There are more problems that even if less frequently can cause rough idle. A good thing to do would DBII DTC scan can be done for free at the nearest Autozone.

Regards.

Check engine light comes on when idling. goes out when driving

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

If the check engine light is on then it can be a faulty sensor somewhere. We won't know until you take it in for an engine scan. On the engine scanner it will list fault codes and by then you'll know what sensor needs replacement.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

1996 ford bronco 5.8 litre, auto, engine idle has

Do you have a check engine light on? First thing I would do is unplug the IAC motor when the engine is warm. If the idle speed doesn't change you have a vacuum leak or a bad IAC motor. If the idle speed goes down you might have a bad TPS or IAC

Hi djay,
the idle speed control can be adjusted on the pump by turning the adjusting screw that stops the accelerator lever.
