While this is a common symptom, its causes are many...
To begin with, make sure you are current on all updates from Windows update, and check to see if there are optional hardware updates available for your system.
Have you gone to the event viewer to see if there are error events reported with respect to the running processes? Look to see if you have repeated warnings or errors with the same code, at times when you experience the freezing.
It also could be symptomatic of a hardware failure... of some kind. See

I would begin to troubleshoot the issue by attempting to work through Microsoft's optimize vista tutorial
available here, and see if you can sort it out on your own. If you take those steps and still have difficulty, please post back with the results.
