Question about Dell Inspiron 8600 Notebook

My 8600 is no longer able to complete a system restore. I removed the firewall, but it didn't help. Updates from MS and ITunes have scrambled some programs and I want to go back. Any ideas?

You can try going to safemode to perfrom the system restore. If the OS can still be restored it should work but if not you might as well need to reinstall the OS as a last option.

Safemode:Tap F8 when you see Dell Logo to go to the advance option.

Try the following tips to resolve error 9006 in iTunes if you encounter the error problem when updating iOS system software.
  1. Insure that you have an active network connection and are connected to the internet
  2. Quit out of iTunes
  3. Update iTunes and also install any available software updates to Mac OS (or Windows, if applicable)
  4. Reboot the computer (Mac or PC)
  5. Temporarily disable any and all software firewalls, including anti-virus (if applicable)
  6. Try using a different USB port on the computer and updating again

Recovery mode with out using the power button


An iPod Touch's "Recovery Mode" is for alleviating major operating system issues.
Recovery Mode rolls back your iPod's operating system, stripping problematic updates and downloads from the unit.
The goal of this total system recovery is to revert the iPod to a stable, usable version.
Before you use Recovery Mode, exhaust other troubleshooting methods.
In some cases, Recovery Mode is triggered automatically after a failed system update or system restore.
When it goes into Recovery Mode automatically, you cannot use your iPod until you complete the recovery process.
You can get your iPod Touch out of Recovery Mode using Apple's free iTunes software.

Turn on your computer and open iTunes.
If you are prompted to download any new iTunes updates, install the updates before proceeding.
Plug an iPod USB cable into your computer.
Do not plug the other end into your iPod Touch yet.

Turn off your iPod Touch. If the iPod Touch is already shut down, skip this step.
Press and hold the Home button on your iPod Touch, and plug the other end of the USB cable into your iPod Touch.
Release the Home button after you see a white USB icon and the iTunes logo appear on your iPod Touch's screen.
At this time, a pop-up should appear on your computer screen, explaining that the software has detected an iPod in Recovery Mode.

How do i over ride the passcode on my ipod touch

Some iPods, such as the iPod Touch, include a passcode option as a security feature. The passcode is intended to deter thieves from stealing the device and to discourage any unauthorized use. If you have set up a passcode on your iPod and now have forgotten it, you can bypass the passcode screen. Bypassing the passcode screen requires that the device be fully restored. Restoring the iPod will remove all files from the device. Only files in the iTunes library, or in another place on the computer, can be restored. Once restoration is complete, you can update the iPod.



What you need? USB CABLE



Bypass the iPod Passcode and Restore the Device

1 Open the iTunes software on your computer. If you don't have iTunes installed, see Resource for download link.

2 Connect the iPod to the computer using the USB cable.

3 Press and hold down both the "Power" and "Home" keys simultaneously for 10 seconds or until the screen goes black. Now release the "Power" key.

4 Release the "Home" key when the message "We have detected an itouch in recovery mode" appears. Confirm that the iPod will be restored.

5 Hit "Back up" to save your iPod settings when prompted.

6 Select the "Restore" option. Allow restoration to begin. Make sure to keep the iPod connected to the computer and iTunes open. Once complete, the Apple logo will display on the iPod screen, and iTunes will notify you when the process is complete.



Update the iPod

1 Open iTunes and connect the iPod to the computer using the USB cable.

2 Select your iPod under "Devices" in the left pane.

3 Click the "Summary" tab.

4 Click the "Check for Update" button. The iTunes software will check for any available updates. Follow the additional prompts to confirm and install the updates.

You can resolve the restore issues using the troubleshooting steps found in this document:

1. Update to the latest version of iTunes

To see if you have the latest version of iTunes, open iTunes and check for updates.
  • Windows: Choose Help > Check for Updates
  • Mac: Choose iTunes > Check for Updates
If there is an update to iTunes available, install the update and try to restore again. If you do not have an active connection to the Internet, or your Internet security settings are configured to prevent iTunes from communicating with Apple, iTunes will alert you that the iTunes update server could not be contacted. Resolve your Internet issues and attempt to update again.

2. Restart your computer
Simply restarting the computer can clear up certain issues that could prevent you from restoring iPhone or iPod touch. After you restart, try restoring the device again in iTunes.

3. Open the proper ports and allow access to Apple servers
During the update and restore process, iTunes needs to contact Apple. Ensure that your computer has the following ports open and can access these servers:
Port 80
Port 443
phobos.apple.com, albert.apple.com, gs.apple.com
If you see "Error 9807", you must open access to the following VeriSign servers:
evintl-ocsp.verisign.com
evsecure-ocsp.verisign.com
If you are using a Windows operating system, you can follow this article to help resolve issues caused by third-party security software.
You may need to update, properly configure, disable, or uninstall built-in firewalls and other security software to prevent interference with iTunes. For assistance with this, contact the company that supports the firewall or security software you use. If you are using proxy settings, try to restore or update without using a proxy.
4. USB Troubleshooting
Connect iPhone or iPod touch to a different USB port on your Mac or Windows PC. USB 2.0 ports that are built in to the computer are preferred over a hub. If you tried connecting iPhone or iPod touch to USB ports on the front of the computer, try connecting them to rear USB ports. After doing this, try to restore the device in iTunes.
If the issue continues:
Remove all USB devices except the keyboard, mouse, and iPhone or iPod touch. Remove all USB hubs and connect directly to the computer.
Connect iPhone or iPod touch directly to the included USB cable, bypassing the dock.
Restart the computer.
Try to restore the device again in iTunes.
If available, test with alternative, known-good USB cables.

5. Restore on a different computer
If the issue is not resolved with the above steps, try to restore using a different computer. Ensure that the computer you use has USB 2.0 ports, the latest version of iTunes, and that you connect directly to the computer.
If another computer is not available, proceed to the Advanced Steps below.

CLEAN MY COMPUTER


If you are using Windows Vista go to your control panel>perforfance and maintenance. Click on disk cleanup first then when that is done run a defrag. Reboot and you should be running faster. Hope this helps.

Vista Internet Problem


Assuming you don't have any data on the hard drive that isn't backed up, use the Product restore CD/DVD that came with the laptop to re-install Vista completely from scratch. THIS WILL WIPE ALL EXISTING DATA FROM THE HARD DRIVE. Then go online ONLY to download any and all Microsoft patches. Then make sure you have good anti-virus software installed and up to date (run the update repeatedly until it says there are no more updates). Then AND ONLY THEN you can safely go online to do other stuff. Install iTunes after taking a System Restore checkpoint (look in the Vista help in the start menu for this). If, after installing iTunes, you get the same problems, use System Restore to revert to the state before installing iTunes. Don't try & uninstall it - it doesn't always work properly. Then use a different media player (e.g. WinAMP) - iTunes and Vista often don't play nicely with each other.

USB / hardware problems, caused by MS updates!

I typed quite a long response for you yesterday. Unfortunately, in my haste over another situation, I clicked off the page before it was posted. This will probably save you some time reading, anyway, as I will try to condense the same information I wrote yesterday. If you need additional detail in regard to the processes enumerated below, or how to accomplish same, please advise.

First, yes, SP3 has known and acknowledged issues, and many users have uninstalled the service pack until the bugs are worked out. Presuming the uninstall files have not been removed from your system, you should also be able to remove SP3. Uninstall the program by using Add/Remove Programs (Control Panel) - you should see SP3 listed toward the bottom of the program list.

Two other matters go hand in hand with this. In addition to the SP3 file itself, there have likely been numerous other updates which were reliant on SP3 for functionality. If you utilize the system restore function, and if there is still a restore point available prior to SP3 install, you should be able to completely revert your system. Otherwise, it will be a matter of isolating the updates that need to be removed (due to removal of SP3).

Secondly, I have voluminous experience with both service packs and automatic updates creating tremendous problems with my system. I spent months working with the "top level" MS R&D team in order to try to solve issues created by SP2 - MS finally closed the case with a status of unresolved. Further, my issues with Automatic Updates (A/U) started about 1.5 years ago, when MS changed the process and it consistently resulted in consumption of 100% of system resources, locking up the system continuously for extended periods of time. After MS put out a fix for this, I installed, and again enabled A/U. (However, please note that I always had A/U set to download and let me decide when to install. This too was due to prior negative experience of great magnitude.) Needless to say, the same issues occurred again within a matter of months, although every single "fix" of previous "fixes" MS put out for this matter was installed as it was issued.

To this day, I have not again enabled (and do not intend to) the A/U process. Rather, I visit the Updates site periodically and download appropriate updates, with my complete control and interim verification of the entire process. Therefore, though it is an extremely personal decision, my choice is to disable Automatic Updates. There are many, I am sure, who would suggest this should not be the approach; however, with the full months worth of time that have been eaten up because of the A/U process, I find it much more useful and helpful to control updates myself.
