Convergence problem on 60 inch rear projection RCA

My RCA rear projection TV has worked well just before vacation. I came back, turned it on and found that it blew the main fuse on the AC (5 amp). Replacement of the fuse allowed the tv to come on, but the convergence is off. Voltages from the convergence power supply board are incorrect.

Any ideas?

Here is what the picture looks like

The TV has a chassis number of PTK195AC and is model P60812BL

I went into the service mode using the front panel as the service manual
describes. There were no error codes in P1 through P3.

I checked the voltages out of J19701 connector from the power supply to the convergence board. They are not to specification (at all).

pin 1 should be -45, is -1.8
pin 2 should be -15, is -1.9
pin 3 gnd
pin 4 should be +23, is +23.3
pin 5 should be +15, is 0
pin 6 should be -45, is 1.7

If the plug is pulled going to P19304, all the voltages go to 0 volts at J19701 on the power supply board. The service manual says to "disconnect power supply". I took that to mean pull J19701. I assume that the power board is bad. My question is..
Was the board blown by the load of something wrong on the convergence board, or just a bad component. I checked the input diode bridge and it seems to be OK. I would guess I should replace the power supply board. I wonder how much that is? I would hate to blow it after changing it out. What are the chances of that? I know that this TV has a coolant problem where the coolant gets on the boards. I see no evidence of this, but I know that some residue may be there and not seen. I blew off the dust and there is no greasy contamination that I see.

Can anyone tell me

1. What typically goes wrong when the main fuse blows and the picture
goes out of convergence

2. How do you get into the built-in geometric alignment grid pattern?

I would like to nurse this TV along for a while. It has given good
service and I have no reason to replace it other than the present
problem. I really don't want to get into it deeply. For example, I
would prefer NOT to get a chipper checker or have to hook an
oscilloscope to it.

Do you think my problem is strictly on the power supply board, or is it possible that the problem extends to the convergence board also? As you can see in my above post, the power supply board has no voltages when it is unplugged from the convergence board and only 1 voltage (+23 volts) on pin 4. I expect that I will have to get a TV tech involved, but I want to be pretty sure of the answer before I do. The last time (2 1/2 yrs ago) the tech was not able to fix my problem (turned out to be contamination on the boards, probably from the coolant that I fixed myself). Do you have an estimate of what the cost would be to have a tech fix this? How do I judge a good, knowledgeable tech?

Thanks for the information. Since purchasing parts and probably quite a bit of effort will be involved in working this problem, i have taken it to a TV repair shop. They can probably resolve the problem faster than I could as long as it is straight forward. The fellow I took it to seems competent, so I will let him take it on.

Thanks again. I think some of the info that you gave me should help him.

I took the TV chassis to a local repair shop and they fixed it by replacing the STK regulator chip in the convergence power supply. So far, so good. Looks beautiful again.

The likely cause of this failure is the convergence ICs got shorted and for sure It damage the pico/micro fuses and some of the fuse resistors nearby the STK ICs.
You do not need the chipper checker thingy for now until you can correct the voltage issue.
I would suggest to remove the convergence ICs first and check for the other possible blown parts.
I could indicate where the parts are but I do not have the service manual.
Let me know if you need further assistance.

The failure was cause by the convergence board ICs and for sure It damage the fuse resistors and fuses.

The reason you get some voltage with the whole assembly connected is because there is power circulating through the circuit. Once you disconnect the J19701 connector, no power circulates.

Check your power supply circuit and find all the fuses in there and check them for continuity. I'm sure you have blown fuses there.

If you have the service manual, you can send it to me to guide you through the repair process.

Philips 60 inch rear projection screen is wacky!!

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.
