Question about Computers & Internet

Cable modems I am currently using broadband (cable). I would like to hook up another pc in a different room using a second cable modem box. I tried this but received message that there was no connection. Is there a way to hook up a second cable modem in order to get an additional pc line in another room rather than use a router?

I have heard of people doing it.
However, you will need to pay the cable company for an additional line / service, as the MAC address of the modem has to be registered with them in order for it to work.

Yes there is a way

1.Buy a four/eight port hub or switch(switch preferrably) from a hardware store.
2.Connect the cable that run from the modem to the first computer to the switch/hub box.
3.Run different cat5 twisted pair cable(straight through) from the switch box to the various computer.the cable length depends on where your pcs are located.
5.apply the right ip address where applicable or use DHCP

Can't not connect the router to cable modem

I'm not sure if DSL modems feed signals on the same pair of wires as Cable modems, and I'm thinking that's where your problem stems from. Contact your current broadband provider (Cable?) and have them try to help your current modem/router connection. It ought to be something fairly simple, as the typical RJ45 cable is used to connect them together. (NO PHONE CABLE !!!!)

Trouble connecting netgear wireless router to rca modem DCM425

First try connection the Yellow ethernet cable from the rca modem to your computer's network connection. If you get a connection this way, then your modem will work with a ethernet cable. If not, then call Comcast for help. The modem ethernet out to computer port must be connected to the wan line of the router. Then you can connect an ethernet cable from your computer network connection to one of the 4 ports of the router. For wireless connections you must set up the router and wireless adaptor with the same settings to connect. Follow the routers directions.
Good Luck

Current modem working fine with ATT DSL. I want to install a second modem (2wire) by direct connection to same DSL phone connection (in different room). I have hooked up other modem, filled in user ID and...

Is that second location also a DSL line? You may have to consult with AT&T to see if the DSL line runs to that second location.

What are you trying to accomplish? By adding a second modem, you essentially create two separate networks. Why not use a switch and connect it to the first modem, which would allow you to connect more PCs.

Setting Up a Wireless Network

You can still use your existing Linksys router with your cable modem. In fact the router your have is designed to work with DSL/Cable Broadband connections.

1. Make sure to properly connec the devices in your network. Modem will be connected to the Internet port of the router. Then, laptop will be connected to one of the 4 Ethernet ports of the router. For initial setup of your router with modem, you need to hardwire laptop to the router.
2. Press and hold reset at the back of the router for about 15 seconds.
3. After 15 seconds turn off the router and then turn off the modem. Wait for a minute.
4. Power on modem and wait for the lights to be ready.
5. When modem lights are on, turn on router.
6. There should be 4 lights on. Power should be steady green. Internet, WLAN and Ethernet port.
7. Checked if you have Internet connectivity on your laptop while it is wired to the router.
8. If Internet is working, disconnect laptop from wired connection to the router and check available wireless network that laptop can detect.
9. The default wireless network name that the Linksys router broadcasts is "linksys". Connect to it which is an unsecured wireless network.
10. Once you are successfully connected, check Internet.

Hope this helps!

Is the PC wired directly to the broadband modem?

If it is, try this:
* Turn off the PC
* Turn off the modem - make sure its powered off completely
* Wait 30 seconds
* Turn modem on, wait for the lights to become solid (Cable or Online LED should be solid)
* Start the PC

Connecting a router

To connect more than one computer to same network, you need to use a router. Two modems will not work on same network.
My suggestion:
Buy a wireless modem router for cable broadband (and eventually a wireless network card for the other computer.
Here is an example: Linksys BEFW11S4 Wireless-B 4-Port Cable/DSL
Ask retailer to get right model for your broadband.
Connect the remote computer with wireless.

Use of router in network

Try reset the router & cable modem. There ia a reset (very small) button on the back of the wireless router & the modem. Disconnect the power cords to both. Use a pen & hold in for 10 seconds (router & modem). Re-connect power (router & modem) & restart PC. If your service still has not returned. Chances are it's your internet provider & not you. Double check by connecting your modem directly to your PC.

Luck!
