If you have an older Kenmore dryer, the drum bearing and/or rollers may be failing. This would cause the drum to rotate unevenly (wobble) and possibly contact the heating elements on the rear panel. This would account for the banging noise and burning smell. Your dryer has to be serviced.
Hello Jodi Roberts. I want to help you with your problem but I will need a little more information please.
Can you describe the noise? Is it a vibrating type noise or Is it a squealing sound, as though the belt is slipping? Can you smell something from the dryer similar to the smell of burning rubber?
Dependent upon what you describe can tell me if it is the rollers or glides in the front of the drum support; OR rollers or bearings in the rear of the drum.
Or as I said before, a slipping belt from either a seized bearing on the drive pulley, or the idler tension pulley, or simply a worn & frayed belt that just needs to be replaced due normal wear & tear.
Two things are likely going on here,1- something is dragging down your motor check for a twist in the belt, idler pulley bad, belt installed wrong or wrong belt. Also check your front drum felt and glides if the felt is bunched up that will drag down the motor. Now the smell you probably have some felt or lint in the burner clean it carefully you do not want to damage your igniter.
make sure vent is cleared MDG is a gas dryer so sometimes when theyre heating it may smell different than youre used to. blower impeller wheel has a "D" shaped hole & can round out causing it to hang up the motor which could cause a burning smell but usually will make a lot of noise B4 that will happen.
A vibration tells me it may be the idler pulley(s). If the pulley seizes, the belt will burn and break. If it smelled like burning rubber, then thats what happened
