Question about Sony KDL40EX400 40 in. HD-Ready TV
I have the Sony Bravia 40" KD model LCD TV. It is almost 5yrs old and has about 14,000hrs of use. It has recently developed a band across the top where the picture is slightly darker than the rest of the screen. Can this be fixed?

First, you will have to define what you mean by "hot to touch" ie.:
can you or can you not hold your hand on it for a few moments.

I risk getting a bad rating from you, but it sounds as though you have a bad LCD panel. I have seen sections of the panels fair, usually caused by a separation of the ribbons connecting to the panel itself or a bad TCON board (the board that addresses the pixels. It is part of the panel on Sony TV's). Your best bet is to contact Sony customer service at 800-222-SONY to see if they will work out some kind of accommodation on the repair, like possibly covering the parts or splitting the repair costs with you. I hope I have provided you with good information and you do not rate me poorly for your bad news.

I would have it looked at before saying it is burn in, a BLACK horizontal line across the set is loss of data to the display from the Y-drive panel. This is something the customer should not attempt anyway, however, if it is either the upper or lower drive board they are not that expensive. Let me know the outcome.

It could be 1 of 4 things:
1. One of the ribbon cables has worked itself loose (Simple Fix)
2. One of the assembly boards maybe faulty
3. The driver board which feeds the panel maybe faulty
4. The panel is faulty
The driver board in the UK costs approx £70 and approx £35-70 to fit it if this is the fault.
All other parts are between £80-160 and approx £35-70 to fit it if this is the fault.
The panel will cost approx 50-75% of what the TV was worth when you bought it - "Repair versus Replacement"
