Question about Office Equipment & Supplies

# I have a 74v DC to 110v AC converter and I would like to know how many amps I can expect out of it? I am not sure how to calculate it.

Locomotive systems run at 64 VDC. The 74Volts is there when the engine is running jst like on a car where the 12 volt battery is actually being charged a little higher, around 15 or 16 volts. Enough on that though.
Most of our battery systems consist of two 32 volt batteries connected in series and most of our starters are 32volts also connected in series except for a few locomotives acquired through mergers which have two 64 volt starters hooked in parallel.
As far as running things in the cab. Most of our cabs have what looks like a standard 110 volt outlet in them for running test equpment or whatever. There is 64 volts dc at these outlets and we have plugged regular 110 volt computer power slupplies into them for running laptops with no problems although I would not say that this would work on every one and I would be a little afraid to try it on one of my own computers for fear of burning something up.

I guess what you are thinking is: Can I use a Locoverter to convert
74VDC down to 12VDC and then add an inverter to step up the 12VDC to
110VAC...?

In theory, yes, (although not very efficient) but looking at these
locoverter products, I don't believe their current is enough to then run
an inverter.

Consider, if you want 110VAC and 100 Watt, your 12 VDC supply must at
least deliver 10 Amp!

If you are desperate and skillful enough then you are probably better
off building a 74VDC to 100VAC inverter yourself, something like

But of course, you need to make sure the DC side (component
specifications) can run at 74VDC, and the output transformer should be a
110 / 75 Volt type.

be careful with switch settings

please be aware if timing is required or electrical motors this could be a problem as usa is 60Hz and your appliciance may be designed to run at 50 Hz frequency

Hi Bart,
You will find there is a specification plate on the rear of the unit.
It should have a rating on it showing the wattage of the unit. This is usually the amount needed to operate all the functions of the boombox.
The wattage is your input voltage multiplied by the current draw in amps. So the amperage is the rated wattage of the unit divided by the input voltage.
Usually all power goes through the transformer, so I would use this input amperage as a guide, and assuming there is no power loss, use the same calculation for the output - you know it is 9 volts, so the wattage going to the unit is the same as the input wattage, so you can calculate the amperage from this.
Transformers usually work on AC input/output, so there will also be a rectifier to convert the AC to DC for your boombox.
I would add 10 - 20% above your calculation to make sure you have sufficient power. Also I suggest that you install a fuse between your transformer and the boombox for safety.

You cannot convert an AC charger into a DC charger for a cordless tool, no matter what you do. The charger has a transformer that operates only on an AC current only. You did not state what battery your drill has, but a range of chargers are available for cordless tools, as long as the batteries are 12v or less. Speak to your hardware outlet.

### Power Requirement for Delphi Roady 2 XM Radio

Radio shack has a unit that plugs into a 110 socket and will accept the 12V plug that is standard with the radio. I use my unit in the house, car and on my motorcycle. The part number is 22-505 for the Radio Shack part.
