Question about Nakajima AE-740 Typewriter

1 Answer

I just found a Hermes 3000 typewriter today. I fixed an old corona years ago that had the same problem. Everything works except when you type a key it does not continue to move along so each letter piles on top of the last. I have begun gently taking it apart recalling what I did with the other typewriter. The problem is similiar there is a small spring supported wheel that attaches by what in this model is like fishing line to a small hook (on the other model it was string). I am wondering how to reattach it i have tried both directions and cannot seem to get the appropriate tension. I am also unsure if this is the only problem with that is causing the lack of movement. Thanks!

You have to wind up the spring drum. the round thing, be sure to wind it the correct way. in the pull of the direction.
Wind up about five time then attach the cord.

The typewriter is set in P.S. mode instead of 10 or 12. This switch is in lower left corner of keyboard.

SOURCE: I am trying to type

there is a slide switch on the L.H. side of the key board that reads 10,12,15, PS
the switch needs to match the print wheel stile you have in your typewriter. most typ's have 10 or 12.
PS stands for proportional spacing a takes a spicule print wheel

SOURCE: return arm on smith-corona silent typewriter does not advance

The linespace selector lever is probably at zero 0
try moving it to 1 1 1/2 or 2. There is also a detent lever that releases the ratchet of the roller. You should feel a bumping when you move the roller wheel.

Where can i get a manual for my smith-corona typewriter?

Can you give us any help in identifying the machine? Is it manual or electric, for example?
There's a downloadable and printable manual for the Smith-Corona Standard Portable here.
Bear in mind that if this is an old typewriter then there is a very good chance that no one has bothered to rewrite the manual since the invention of the internet. In such cases the best you can expect is a scan of an old paper manual.

I have a smith corona sd680 work processor typewriter. When I type the letter don't come out clear and I have to type over and over in order to read the letters. This is an old typewriter in the office...

This problem is usually caused by an old ribbon theey do dry out when left in tthe typewriter a long time, also if the paper is really hard or has a slick surface the ink from the ribbon will not stick to the paper.

Smith corona SL480 instruction manual. I just need a manual so I know how to use the features built into the typewriter

How to Use a Smith Corona Typewriter A Smith Corona typewriter can be either a manual or electric model. Whichever model you have, the typewriter works in basically the same way. If you are familiar with a computer keyboard, you can type on a typewriter as the keys are laid out exactly the same. Unlike a computer, typing mistakes are harder to correct and, unless you use carbon paper, you will only have one copy of any document you type.

I have an old Hermes 3000. I was in the middle of typing away and the machine was working perfectly. Then all of sudden the carriage will no long stop. It just slides directly to the right margin and stops...

It might be that you tab key is engaged which would do this. also try gently moving the carriage to a point, pressing the space bar and then releasing the carriage. It might be the escapement..
Hope this works!

Is the typewriter a Smith Corona SD 250? If so, you have entered the "memory" mode by mistake. Over on the left side of the typewriter is a switch marked "MEM", "LINE", and "TYPE". Move the switch down to "LINE" or "TYPE" to resume normal typing. DO NOT PRESS ANY NUMBER BUTTONS ON "MEM" MODE! Does this information fix your problem?

I just got this typewriter a few days ago so I don't know everything about it yet... But I believe that this is one way to fix your problem.

Best of luck to you!

Smith Corona XD 6500

You might check the outlet to make sure there is 120V. Otherwise there is a good chance the power supply has burned out. Also the cover has to be down, and there has to be a ribbon mounted properly for this machine to work.
