Nice camera! :)
There are a couple of things that cause this problem;
dust working its way into the crevices of the camera (including foods, liquids, other).
Impact, repetitious impact (the camera being tossed around in a bag or pocket)
These are some causes for this button being stuck.
The good news is the repair is fairly simple and cost is too.

Hi there, I was taking photos with a 3 years old canon ixus 70 and suddenly the screen became black!! from then taking picture was impossible it comes out black too. All the menu buttons work properly,...

First verify that your camera is actually an SD500 (takes SD cards) and not an S500 (takes CF cards). If your camera is actually an S500, this would probably be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free worldwide, and may also include free shipping both ways (free shipping varies with countries). This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check this link for more info.

Applicable cameras include:
A40, A60, A70, A75, A80, A85, A95, A300, A310, S1 IS, S60, S200, S230, S330, S400, S410, S500, SD100, SD110, IXUS V2/V3/300/400/430/500/II/IIs, IXY Digital 200a/300a/320/400/450/500/30/30a

Now if your camera is indeed an SD500, a stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open).

To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.

Camera Buttons on back do not work

Hi,

Possibly two (2) reasons:
1. Software/firmware glitch. Reset the camera by removing the battery;
2. One of the buttons is stuck preventing any other from working. Determine which one and tap on it a couple of times as a temporary workaround. Ideally, the unit must be opened and the contacts/ switches cleaned with contact cleaner.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

The lens gets stuck out and the little green light bleeps but it won't work or turn on -.- what do i do?!??!!?

Put in fresh batteries in your camera and try to power on. If this didn't work, to do this little trick:

1. Hold the camera on your right hand with the lens facing the ground.

2. As you press the power on button, tap or hit the camera's base to your left palm. Do this several times.

Chances are, there could be a sand or granule of dust that got stuck on the sides of the lens, preventing it to retract properly.

Hope this helps.

Ex s500 - camera lens stuck in out position.

Sounds like you have a defective motherboard, because it wasn't dropped, it is not usually a lens issue. This is a camera repair place, they specialize on small cameras like casio exilims. I've had a Canon sd750 fixed with them for the exact same problem. The website is : camera repair nyc

Lens stuck out; camera won't stay on

I have the same problem. Its actually because the On/Off button got pushed in somehow and its stuck. At this time right now, im not sure how to make it unstuck, but sometimes it will stay on. But when you push on, since its being held down, its stuck that way and immediately turns off because its still being held down constantly. Maybe try using a thing needle to try and push it out?

TROUBLE SHOOTING

We had the same problem. It would beep three times then shut off.
The lens was stuck in the out position. My son played with it until it loosened up and it works now. It had nothing to do with batteries.
If yours is stuck out. twist and push until it goes back in.
Good luck
