Question about Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

Pc router Hello.. Could you tell me exactly what I need.. I am currently using broadband service in my home. I am trying to connect a second pc (windows xp) in a different room. I was told I needed a router. The pcs are pretty far apart so I do not want cords running all over the floor, etc. What do I need in order to hook up the 2nd pc without having cords running everywhere. There are so many routers out there and I have no idea which one to get. Also, I was told since I didn't want cords running everywhere, I would need to go wireless. I have heard several things, can you please help?

Look for a "g" or "n" compatible wireless router, you should be able to find one for about 40 bucks. If your second PC doesn't already have one, your going to need a wifi receiver, also about 40 bucks. The most important part is or follow the instructions VERY carefully when setting up the router. Also, if the manual isn't that detailed, try looking on the install CD, I found a more in-depth .pdf file on my Linksys. When setting up your wireless network, make sure to use the highest encryption that your equipment can handle, preferably WPA2. One of the setup steps will be to create an SSID, this is how you (and everyone else) will find your network.
When you install the receiver in the second computer look for that SSID, remember your password, and viola, your connected.

I appear to have lost my IP addresses and cannot replace them. So I am stuck with working offline and cannot get on

if you connect using a broadband router or cable router, they are set up by default to assign ip addresses automatically (via DHCP). Default settings for windows is to obtain the address automatically as well.
If this isn't working try turning off your router for a couple of minutes, then turn it on again and select repair network from the network settings screen in windows. If it doesn't start to work you may have a faulty router/ cat5 lead (or network socket on the pc). try connecting using a friends pc/laptop to see if the problem is with the computer/settings, or with the networking equipment.

I have a linksys wireless-N broadband router model WRT160N and i am unable to connect my ipod touch to the network. The network it locked. How do you unlock it?

hi there,
there should be a key on the back/bottom of the router, usually a mixure of letters and numbers. should be called seriel key/network key/wpa key or something to that effect. so when you try connecting your ipod to the network and it asks for a key, enter the key on your router. enter it exactly as it is on the router(i.e...small, capital letters, number) hope this helps :)

I have a USB broadband for my internet. I got it from my service provider, certainly for a fixed pay per month. However the signal is so slow in spite of the internet speed of 2 mbps because of poor signal...

You can't connect the any antenna you bought to your PC. Normally, any Wireless Boardband router/modem whether it is cable or USB connection, the antenna is usually built-in or with an external appendage sticking out from the Router/modem. You have to check with your ISP whether they have any alternative to boost the signal to your wireless modem.

If they coverage to your area is no good, look for another ISP which have much excellent band coverage.

Hope it herlps.

How can i set up a connection to a network with windows vista basic

There are several ways to do this you can use a router, wireless router or set up a direct connection. With a router all you have to do is connect your modem to the router and computers to the router. For a wireless connection you need a wireless card installed in your computer and a wireless router. You connect your modem to your router and set up your wireless connection with the software that came with your card or through windows wireless service. You can also connect two computers through their ethernet port with an ethernet cord. You plug coonect them with the cord go into control panel open network connections and to the left chose set up home or small office network. You will need to configure the computer with internet access as the host and the other as a guest. You can share any type of connection such as dial up, cable, dsl, and broadband.

I re-installed windows. How do i connect to the internet?

Very possible you don't have the correct ethernet driver. Try looking up the driver off the manufacturer of you computers website. It will be listed as a "network driver". Good luck!

Internet works for only a while and then stop

sometimes routers can build up static charge and you need to disconnect them for 10 seconds. Make sure your pc's ip is set to automatic configuration so it can interact with your router. Set up new home network if needed

The magic jack is pluged into the phoneline directly

OK.. First of all, I am hoping you understand the basics of the MagicJack concept ?? Highspeed Internet connection on your PC, MagicJack plugged into your USB port, with a phone plugged into the other end of the MagicJack ? It requires High Speed, no dial up, and marginally works on my wireless Broadband due to atmospheric influences. It DOES work on my bluetooth wireless cell modem just based on the better speeds I get from the modem vs. my wireless Broadband.

1. If you have a Cable Modem or Wireless Broadband Dish for internet, follow the steps below.. IF you have DSL, skip to # 2.. if you have Dial-up skip to # 3,

I personally own wireless Broadband, so my ongoing experience is from here. I own a MagicJack for traveling and a Vonage line, for my house fax line service because the MagicJack is not strong enough, power wise, to push through my CAT/5 house, phone lines. Vonage does provide phone for the entire house, for the most part, cleanly, because Vonage uses a powered router to provide the final signal, which I then jumber over to a phone jack to connect into the house. It also requires that you disconnect your external phone lines, that would normally go back to the "Big Bad Phone Company". This can be done at the demarcation point, where your regular phone lines connect into a box, outside your house ? The internet I have, is in my shop, about 150' from the main house, Vonage's router power's the whole house, just fine.

2. With DSL, you will have good solid speeds, but you will still have the issue of, MagicJack, being too low in it's power source, because it comes from the USB port of your PC. You are basically going to be stuck with a single wireless or corded phone, for the MagicJack service. In this case, since the DSL is fed through the BBPC phone lines, you will not be able to 'pipe', even Vonage back through your house phone lines.

3. If you're on dialup, you're going to have poor service, out of the box.. you're just not going to be fast enough to be clean.

As an added note.. Your query for help is concerning.. again, high speed internet into your PC, MagicJack plugged into your PC's USB port, the phone plugs into the MagicJack's RJ-11 phone port.

Thank you for your time in these matters.
