Question about Raymarine Linear Feedback Unit For Outboard Engines, 12"

1 Answer

I have twin 2004/2005 90 HP Honda outboards on my houseboat. These engines are carburatored. They are controlled thru Commanders. When shifting from forward to reverse or reverse to forward the engines die intermitantely. I have changed spark plugs and fuel filters. I have also raised the idle to 1100 rpm. The engines seem to run and idle very smoothly. This is a serious problem with a 60 ft. house boat, as the loss of an engine in wind nearly caused me to be blown into the shore, and into a dock. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Sorry but its a carb ,i nearly bought a honda engine with like this but i plumped for the mercury with fuel injection ,you will need to remove the carbs and put them on the kitchen table and strip and clean them right out then rebuild and refit and get the mixture on the idle right ,fuel to air mix should be about 14 to one ,this is done on a jet on the side which i suspèct is corroded and blocked ,then their should be a air bleed screw as well ,if this all to complicated which it is then get the man from the dealer to do it for you .you have a idle jet .compound jet and a main jet and trust me if you do not know then dont play with it .On my single outboard i rewired it so when its warm i can put in drive and start in drive to stop wear on the dog clutches ,dont like changing them either as they are expensive and difficult when engine is used in salt water and the bolts corrode ,also change oil regular in the bottom diff unit ,i do mine every year when i paint the bottom ,and i use car diff oil EP90 as that mercury stuff is so expensive and i begrudge paying for it when i have drums of oil here in the yard ,i also use the car spark plugs and oil filter for a panda .When you are moored up and not using the engines take the covers off and in the bottom of the float chambers are drain screws ,so when parked up just drain the carbs of fuel and then they will not clog up with that white powder where the petrol dries out

    Thank you for the info!!

Would any type of carburator cleaner, or fuel additive help?

carb or injector cleaner might help but normally you just remove and strip them as its quicker and easier ,also drain the petrol out of the carbs when not in use is the best bet

Are the controls for a 1998 15 HP 2 stroke Mercury outboard compatible with a 2011 30 HP 4 stroke Mercury outboard

If your old engine/control has the same 'options' as the30hp, yes everything is compatible... (Electric start or trim )
The throttle and shift cables are allways compatible...

Mower died when I engaged the cutting blades. Won't restart.

How long has it been since you used it? Could be a clogged carburator filter or bad gasoline. Gasoline left in lawn mowers and other small engines lose their kick after sitting for a fall and winter season. Try removing the carburator cover and take some fresh gas, just about a little less than 1/8 of a cup and pour it in the carburator and try to start the engine. Once it starts cover the carburator with the palm of your hand and then release it and cover again until the machine stays on after you remove your hand. This is called priming the engine.

Outboard troubleshooting. I have a 75 hp Mercury with 2 carbuerators. Serial # 6559142 it's around a 1989 model.. Problem= tank bubble pumps up tight...sits for a minute and gets soft...when I pump it up...

Sounds like the fuel pump isn't working, you can buy service kits though quite often corrosion will prevent you from removing the valves.. or it could simply be the fuel cap isn't venting, remove fuel cap and see if the engine continues to run!

I have a pre 79 Johnson 2 cylinder 55hp and was after a gear box when I purchased a 55 hp on line. A guy said was running. Trouble is it was delivered and it's some early, electric geared 3 cylinder model,...

They were a great motor. Hope you got the control box with it. That was the weak link. And the lower needs a special "electric shift" oil. Your idle has to be at the correct adjustment so as not to over stress the lower when you shift.

Soon after this lower was brought out, they used the same engineering in their stern drive for many years.

The electric shift went thru many variations, and the system used to shift them changed as well. Some had a "no power" forward gear and some had "Power/no power " forward, So the switch controlling the gearbox is critical.

I dont know where do you live, but honda civic 1992 don use carburator, they are fuel injection, you can have coolant temp sensor problem, or map sensor problem, run diagnose jumping the diagnose wires loated in the passenger side, kick panell close to the door wall, better get the repair book in the parts store to locate the conector ,and read how you can run the diagnosis
