Your defrost system is bad. Replace the defrost thermostat and defrost heater in the freezer.

SOURCE: Refrigerator Side Not cooling
you right but your problem lies in the defrost cycle. your units defrost timer, defrost thermostat or defrost heater has failed. defrost thermostat and heater are located on the evaporator. both can be ohmed out. when the ice builds up on the evap. your cold air can not be transfered to the fresh food side. make sure the fan on the evaporator is running

you have a defrost problem, could be bad adaptive defrost board,t-stat heater, when you open freezer door listen for fan if fan is blowing check the t-stat,look at it and see if it has a buldge on it,sometime you can see this and tell it's bad, you'll need a meter to read out the heater and other parts to see whats bad, might be a good idea to call a tech to do this, when you find problem you have to melt everything out again
