If they are springs, they probably go under the buttons somewhere.

Go buy him a new one that looks like a racing car with flashing lights, he'll just think you love him.

I am thinking you may have to do a system restore to before you got the update. Did you update the drivers for the mouse for Windows 7? Sometimes the older OS drivers get buggy on Win 7. You can get the drivers for free from Logitech's website. One other thing to check, make sure the USB connector is not worn, sloppy or has a broken wire under the rubber cover. It can happen. You should be able to remove the last Win update then you will know if that is the culprit. Hope that helps.

Had the same issue today - you've probably solved by now yourself but adding images for others. Bit fiddly, but got there in the end. Getting the orientation of the housing and the spin click spring is a bit awkward.

Mouse is insensitive

An optical mouse shouldn't drop in sensitivity really. Most commonly I've found dirt or hair - even a single tiny hair - that has become lodged inside the crevice where the optical light is to cause problems.
If it is clean then unless you have electronics knowledge and can try replacing the bright LED that is used, you will need to look at replacing the mouse.

Put back togather

Well I did it. It's not exactly easy to describe. I accidently took mine apart trying to clean the roller ball and out popped the 2 springs. I sort of put it back together in "reverse". In other words, I put it together without the scroll device and then looked through the hole. By doing this, I figured it out -- when you know it's simple but to describe it without pictures is almost impossible. Mine works fine now but I don't know how to help you.
