Pilot light will light and stay lit, but will go out when you turn on the burner.

The most likley cause for patio heaters that light but go out when turned up is a worn thermocouple. These are consumable items that need changing when the patio heaters fails to light. Found this site very useful:

Patio heater is getting no gas to light.I changed the regulator but still nothing.

If the heater is a few years old the first consumable part to go is a thermocouple, these are easy to change and when worn will stop the pilot from lighting. If that does not fix it take a look at patio heater porblem solving page which I found very useful.

Pilot on my patio heater will not stay lit. goes out when i release the knob

If the heater is the same as this type of patio heater and it lights on pilot and goes out it is generally a worn thermocouple. These are designed to switch off the patio heater when something is wrong, changing one fixed 90% of the problems. Sometimes it can also be caused by a worn tilt switch but always start with the most likley and work backwards. Found this site very useful, patio heater problem solving page.

Patio Heater pilot lights won't stay lit

crappy pilot flame (not properly heating the thermocouple), bad thermocouple, thermocouple loose where it screws into the pilot safety valve, bad safety valve magnet.

One or more of those is the problem.

Oh...there is also a saftey switch...in case it tips over. It will also cause the pilot to not stay lit (if the switch or wires that go to i are faulty)

Coleman patio heater 5040A770

These heaters are not designed to be operated below 40 degrees F. If the heater is used below 40 and if you have a gas tank containing less than 25%, the unit will not operate for long and will start going out. If the heater all of a sudden goes out without showing any flickering or pulsations, you have a bad gas valve, there is no thermocouple on this model. Fill your tank and try the heater again. If it continues, give Coleman a call at 800-835-3278.
