Question about Logitech X-540 Computer Speakers

1 Answer

No sound at all.

I've had these speakers for some time but after spilling beer into the volume control they started to play up and started getting quieter untill eventually just turned themselves off.

I washed the volume control with hot water and left it to dry in an airing cupboard and now they turn on, and the speakers making a clipping sort of sound when they go on (whch I think is normal) and I can get sound out of the headphone jack, but they speakers wont play anything at all. I've tried different sources but there isn't even any noise when you rub your fingers on the lead.

Hi.

I am afraid that washing the volume control with water was not the right thing to do. Water will grow oxide that create shorts and cleaning with water will inflict further damage to circuits and components.

After liquid damage you need to allow the disassembled circuit coplete drying, letting it rest in this state for a couple of days.
After that you clean circuit with a no water cleaning solution like this one.

If that does not work, components must be tested, and eventually replaced, desoldering and soldering new ones. Testing is done starting from volume potentiometer that is tested reading Ohms with power off. If there are gaps in Ohms reading while turning volume wheel, then the part must be replaced.

My usb speaker wont play through pc

Is your usb port working? Try another usb port. Are you sure the speakers work? If so, try the speakers on another computer and see if they work.

Look at your Audio and Sound Properties in the control panel to make sure the volume is turned up and not on mute. Click Start/Control Panel or Start/Settings/Control Panel and look for Audio or Sound. You can also get to the Audio and Sound Properties by clicking the megaphone at the bottom right near the time.

My laptop has no sound yet I have no money to purchase a sound driver. can I get a free one

Laptop's sound can fail to work for a couple of reasons:

(1) the sound drivers are not properly installed - as far as I know, every computer manufacturer's web site will allow you to download their hardware drivers for free. Hope you've already done that.

(2) the sound hardware in the laptop are either disconnected or failed - a small number of laptops actually use separate sound cards (instead of integrating the audio hardware on the main board). Hopefully you've already checked that, too.

(3) the audio output jack (headphone) is damaged - in which case the sound hardware is functioning 100%, but there's no sound produced due to a shorted jack.

That being said, if it's neither of the above, the cheapest means of getting some basic sound to a muted laptop would be a USB sound card and a set of external laptop speakers. If it sounds elaborate and expensive, I assure you it's not. Assuming you're running Windows (hopefully XP or newer), you can buy a USB sound card on eBay for around $2 and pay about the same price for a cheap set of cheesy laptop speakers - plug the USB sound card into a working USB port, plug the speakers into the USB sound card, it's plug and play, and ... viola - you'll get $4 worth of cheap sound. It's a bit cumbersome but it's a cheap workaround that I've done before when a laptop went mute and I had only a shoestring budget to work with...

The speakers wont work no sound

This article contains tips for resolving sound related issues in Windows XP.
No Sound From all speakers
  • Check that the speakers are powered on.
  • Check that the speakers are connected to the correct ports on the PC. This is particularly important If the customer has both integrated sound and a sound card.
  • If the speakers have a volume control button - ensure that this is turned up.
  • Check that the Windows Audio service is running. If this is not running then many of the subsequent troubleshooting steps will not work. Go to Start->Run and type services.msc. Double cliick on Windows Audio. Select Start if possible and check that the Startup Type is Automatic. Click OK.
  • If the speakers are digital speakers then try forcing the sound card to use digital. Go to Start->Control Panel->Sound and Audio Devices.. On the Volume tab, click the Advanced button in the Device Volume section. In the Volume Control window, below the Play Control Volume slider, click Advanced. If this does not show select Advanced Controls from the Options menu. Select Digital Output Only
  • If possible try an external audio source like a Walkman, CD, or MP3 player (connect the speakers to the headphone jack)
  • Check that the volume control in Windows isn't muted or turned too low. See the screen shots below. Go to Start->Control Panel and double click on Sounds and Audio Devices.
