Hitachi 53UDX10B power button flashes, chirping noise, LEDs flash

I have a Hitachi 53UDX10B and when I try to turn on the power button flashes and a chirping noise comes from the back. If I let it continue to cycle like that I cannot make it stop until I unplug the tv. I opened up the back and tried again. I noticed several LEDs lite or flashing. Here is what I found. DP11 and DP35 flash. DP23, DP37, and DP06 (red) stay solid. I've readd several posts about convergance. Please help. I would love to avoid a costly repair.

Where do I get ballast from?

  • kreed13 Apr 22, 2008

OK. I downloaded a service manual. Followed a trouble shooting flowchart for Raster and no power. I got to an area and was confused on measuring a pin voltage. I noticed on the power board had no LED lite. So I took it out. Cleaned it up. Made sure fuses not blown. Replaced card and it fired up. Not sure if I let it sit with power off and fixed it or maybe something else. By the way, I'm not a TV repair man, but I am a RF Field Tech for a major wireless company. So I have a little know how.

  • kreed13 Apr 22, 2008

Thats what I thought. I was told to check it by another Service rep. But when I researched I found out mine was N/A. I did take out my power board and check fuses. I replaced and it turns on fine. You got any ideas? Or am I just borrowing time before it goes out again.

  • kreed13 Apr 22, 2008

OK, so the Ballast / Power unit is a couple hundred bucks. And its recommended I replace. Is this on every lamp? or the main power unit. You suggested earlier to replace lamps and ballast. If its two hundred a pop X 3. Thats alot more than the TV is worth at this time. I do appreciate all the help. Please keep the information flowing. Again thanks.

  • kreed13 Apr 23, 2008

Well, Now I can turn my TV on. But after a while it turns itself off and does the blinking power light and Chirping noise. Still a ballast / power unit? If so, is their more than one?

You can get the ballast here.

You do not work on the ballast unless you are experienced in servicing TVs, it is quite dangerous.

    Or here from partstore.
Before replacing the ballast leave tv unplogged for over one hour, the TV can return you a strong electric discharge even when is not connected to power

If you want to save some money go to a repairman and say that you already ordered the ballast, and you are waiting for its delivery, you will pay only labour (my collegues will kill me if they read this).
Have the TV quickly diagnosed before ordering ballast, even if the hissing noise is typical of defective ballast, you never know.

    Attention Jaime:
This TV vulgarly called ballast is called power unit, I already posted it here here from partstore.
It is the same link , It is defective and in need of replacement
and in my opinion it is something you should not DIY. If you just replace fuses you will keep blowing them. You need to replace the power unit.

You should not not have any CRT fungus, as you do not have any symptom for this (blurred pic etc.).
In your case you have to test boards inside, starting from Power supply PWB.

    There is one main
power board and 3 PWB boards for the lamps (R, G,B) . You need to test first
the main Power PWB, then if it is not that the test the 3 PWB on the
    lamps .
Here is a general troubleshooting diagram for locating the problem with diags etc..

Here is the diagram for testing the bpoards, start from PSU:

    Here is PSU schematic

    Here are RGBs.

The chirping is most likely the ballast trying to fire the lamp. Most likely you should replace the ballast and the three lamps and the problem should be fixed. If you check the lamps and ballast and find that one looks like it is the problem, first try replacing just that one but if you are going to replace one why not all? Replacing them shouldn't be too hard if you are good with simple tools and that should fix the problem. Let me know if you have any questions and I would be glad to help.

Thank you for using Fixya and Good Luck

Hi kreed13

My honest opinion would be that if you have never worked on these before , rather have it repaired. If you start fiddling with the IC's and you do not know what you are doing it can cause moer harm than good.

But if you do want to give it a go , search on the board where the chirping is coming from and you will see a small flash on the board where the problem is occuring.

Unplug the unit and resolder that bit only. Should do the trick.

Try the above first before investing in new parts.

The convergence issue might not affect the TV to the point of not turning ON.
The chirping noise you hear, it means there is a short circuit in the circuitry, possible the HOT or power supply assembly.

I forgot to mention that this might not be a DIY project as this defect can be a bit hard to find.

  • Jaime Hernandez Apr 22, 2008

This type of TV does not use the ballast because is a rear projection not a DLP. DLP's use the ballast

I would suggest to research a bit more before spending on a part you will never use, at least on this TV.

  • Jaime Hernandez Apr 22, 2008

If you've done this much work, I would say to check the solder joints around high power resistors and touch them up with fresh solder.

This TV has been around for some time now, so it's hard to say how long it will work.

  • Jaime Hernandez Apr 22, 2008

If you have the service manual, you will not find anything that looks like a ballast but you will see the CRTs mounted on a big metal bracket.

  • Jaime Hernandez Apr 22, 2008

The only time when you replace a CRT is when the picture looks like out of focus and even then you can rebuilt it by replacing the liquid coolant that is inside the CRT assembly.

Chirping, flashing power LED

Ok, first let excuse me for the first solution that I make in the 53UDX10B 53 in. I was thinking was a DLP Television but it was a Projection Television.
The Projection Televisions has others problems, so maybe it is that a Technician must has to solder (weld or give weld points) in some boards (PCBs) inside the TV, (the Main PCB and/or the Sound PCB) and/or perhaps has to change a capacitor (C 33uf 16v) that maybe it is exploded. Because that happen with those old Projection TVs.
It is the same with the 53UWX10B.
For all inquiries please call: 1-800-HITACHI and tell then the problem.
They maybe give you a better solution.

The "green light flashing to the chirping" circuit may be defective.

Not a basic diagnosis--service literature and/or knowledge of each green light circuit will be needed.Possible shop repair.

Chirping noise and flashing front power light.

Theres a short somewhere in the set. Most likly the HOT is shorted or the vertical IC has caused this in the past. In one case I had shorted convergence IC cause this symptom.. This set is solid state and there are no user serviceable parts inside so please call a trained tech to assist you with this problem Good Luck
