Hi there,
Save hours of searching online or wasting money on unnecessary repairs by talking to a 6YA Expert who can help you resolve this issue over the phone in a minute or two.

Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.

SOURCE: FN keys don't work on Sony VAIO VGN-SZ18GP

The solution is as follows, which worked for me:

- Install Windows 7
- let it update all the drivers that it needs to
- Install additional Sony drivers that you need (XP drivers work just fine, but make sure to install them in Administrator mode, so, Run as Administrator), such as camera, fingerprint scanner, etc
- Install the Notebook Control Device Driver (without this the other software does nothing)
- Sony Utilities DLL
- Sony Shared Library

* restart computer *

- Sony Video Shared Library
- SUS (Setting Utility Series)

* restart computer *

- VES (VAIO Event Service)

After this one the Fn keys will start to work. The S1 and S2 keys don't work due to something to do with UAC (but I don't need them anyway)

- VAIO Control Centre (will allow you to change what the S1 and S2 keys do, even though you can't use them :) )

That's it and it worked for me.

Have you pressed the appropriate key sequence to switch the video to the external monitor? On many Sony laptops that's fn+F8.

Screen not working but other monitor work

Your "F"keys are multi function. Look for the one with a picture of a monitor. Press the FN key adt the appropriate F key at the same time. You are probably in remote monitor mode. The F key is usually F5 or F8.

Slowly boot

Try running disc clean up and then defragmenting the drive.
Click start,all programs,accessories,disc clean up.
Select drive "c" and run the cleaner, may take a while, and try not to delete compress old files.
Then when that is done , start,all programs,accessories,disc defragmentor. Defragment drive "c". shut down and reboot you should see some improvement, depending on start up programs etc.

Sony VAIO PCG-K25 Dark Screen

Do you get the same result if its plugged in or running off battery? Try holding down the "FN" key or function key and using one of the Function keys i believe its F6 on the sony's to brighten up your screen if that doesn't work try downloading and reinstalling your video driver and finally you may have a video card issue
