When it says that RAM Cleared every time you turn it ON, that means the backup battery is depleted and needs to be replaced with a fresh one. The calculator has an automatic power down to save energy.

How to retrieve lost data

I am sorry for your loss, but there is nothing you can do to retrieve the programs. But cheer up, you have no more figuring out to it, just retyping. And no, the calculator has nothing against you. It just ran out of fuel (batteries depleted). Calculator batteries are supposed to be changed or recharged.

Screen says ram cleared

When the calculator is turned ON, power to refresh the RAM is supplied by the main batteries. However, when it is OFF, the RAM relies on the backup battery to keep itself refreshed.
If you get the RAM CLEARED message whenever you turn calculator ON, it most certainly is due to a depleted backup battery. You will have to replace the backup battery.

To avoid losing anything important from RAM (what do I say, you are already losing the contents of the RAM), make sure that main batteries are still good, then replace the backup battery.

You can verify the state of the main batteries in a battery tester or by connecting the calculator to the computer with TI USB Silver cable and TI Connect software. If you run into problem such as calculator not recognized it is most probably due to weak batteries.

When you connect it to computer try updating the OS if OS version to 2.53 MP or a more recent one..

I just replaced the batteries. I get the message "RAM Cleared" and then nothing much happens.

This happens when you remove the batteries or replace them. It is just letting you know that the RAM was cleared while the batteries were out. The RAM stores little things throughout your calculator, not a big deal for it to be cleared. The message is just letting you know, it isn't anything to worry about. You should be able to continue using your calculator as normal.

My ti-84 plus it does not respond to the function + or - OR other function, & it come up to display very slow ,slow. thanks

Hi xvbanh,

You need to free up some memory. Try clearing your RAM. Your calculator should operate properly afterward.

Go to [2nd] [MEM] [7] [1] [2]

If your calculator still won't let you delete the RAM memory try the procedure below.

Remove one of the AAA batteries. Press and hold the [CLEAR] key. While holding [CLEAR],
reinsert the AAA battery and then turn the calculator on. The calculator should display the
message "RAM Cleared". Release the [CLEAR] key and then press it one more time to remove the message.

TI-83 Plus ram cleared message when turned on

It calculator tells you Ram Cleared each time you turn it on, the most likely reason is that the backup battery is depleted. Its role is to keep the memory modules electrically refreshed when calculator is turned off. If the backup battery is dead, the memory is erased when you turn calculator OFF. Main batteries no longer supply power and the contents of the memory are cleared.
  1. Check that main batteries are good and inserted in calculator.
  2. Turn calculator OFF.
  3. Replace the backup battery.
  4. Turn calculator ON.
  5. Press the [CLEAR] key to erase the "Ram Cleared" message.

My TI-84 Plus calculator won't work. It won't switch off by itself. When the batteries are reinserted, it says that all RAM has been cleared. When i press the 'ON' button again, the screen clears. but...

The Ram cleared message is normal after you change batteries. When you see this message you press the CLEAR button to erase it. You do not press the ON button again because the calculator is already ON. If you want to turn calculator OFF you press [2nd][ON] (OFF).

On certain calculators, pressing the ON button when calculator is already ON is interpreted as INTERRUPT the current command.
