Question about Friedrich Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

I have an XQ08 model - thru the wall When turned on it provide cooling for approx 10 minutes (sometimes longer) and then it stops blowing cool air. My repair man came and adjusted the sensors which he said might solve the problem. It did not. the thermostat is set to 69, I have it set on 'cool', not money saver. When it stops cooling, and I turn it down to 60, it makes no difference and no sound indicating the compressor clicks on. Any suggestions would be helpful. thank you Ms Hill

Hi

To fix a cooling problem in AC you must know the cooling process that the condenser (outside unit) pulls in the house's warm air and cools it with Freon. The cold air is then forced back into your home through the duct system. Of course if you have a window unit, this process takes place in a more limited area. Before calling a professional, here's a checklist.
Check your thermostat. It may be set on heat instead of cool. Even if the thermostat is set to a temperature below room temperature the unit will not turn on if it is set to heat.
Check your filter. This is paramount as a dirty air filter will restrict air flow and limit the efficiency of the condenser to cool the air. Typically it is recommended that the air filter be changed every month but there are some on the market today that require three month replacement. Make sure the exhaust vents in all the rooms are open and free from debris. If your duct system is in the ceiling make sure they are fully open. If the system exhausts through the floor make sure they are fully open and not covered by shoes, clothing, furniture and/or household items.
The outside unit should be free of any obstructions or debris as this will reduce the amount of air passing through the condenser.
If these items have been checked and the unit is still not running call a repair person for cleaning the condenser and checking the Freon level.

My nine year old 40 inch tv that is seldom used turns on to a perfect picture. 8-10 minutes later the screen goes black but audio is fine. Turning it on and off does not rectify the problem.

Could be a dry joint or something failing as it heats up. Prove this by using a fan to blow cool air into the circuitry and the picture should last longer.

Gently tapping around the circuitry with the handle of a small insulated screwdriver or similar might provide a result, perhaps the location of the fault. There is also freezer spray that can sometimes help by cooling a suspected component.

My 2003 VW Jetta air conditioning is cooling for a few minutes and sometimes longer and then it stops cooling. The fan continues to run but the compressor apparently stops running.

Have you watched the compressor in action? The compressor is driven by the fanbelt which turns a pulley on the compressor shaft, but there's an electric clutch that disengages the pulley from the friction plate attached to the compressor shaft. You should hear a click when the clutch engages and disengages. Do you hear that? Can you see the friction plate turning with the pulley or does it stay in one position while the pulley turns? If if works for a bit then stops turning, you may have a damaged friction plate such that it doesn't engage with the pulley. Take your car to an auto A/C specialist and let them examine it. It's also possible that the relay that sends 12 volts to the clutch is intermittent and needs to be replaced.

more info needed, does the compressor turn on, if not thermostat or compressor issue. if it does turn on it can be that the evap is frozen. check with GE site to find out how to reset the controlling board.. normally its as easy as set to off and unplug for 10 minutes.but before using again you must thaw the evap completly,,w/,blow dryer and remove back wall on the inside of the freezer to expose the evap coils

Hi,
It sounds as if the compressor (that provides the cooling) is cutting out due to either a faulty thermostat or is itself overheating.

Obviously check the thermostat is able to move between it's minimum and maximum levels, anthat this corresponds to the compressor cutting in and out.

With maximum cooling selected, the compressor should not cut out untill the thermostat says it's cool enough. If it does, there is a fault, and you have every right to a refund or a free repair/ replacement.

The fault is usually centered around the compressor electrical components if it is not under any warranty, but it should be. Even if the store does not want to know, the manufacturer should back it for 1 year.

Thanks for using Fixya!
