Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

I have a Carrier Model# FA4BNF048, It just started making rattling noise and a thump sound like a car intake, the system is still cooling fine, its just the noise that is bothering us. I managed to get the cover off to listen carefully to the noise, that seems to be coming from the blower motor, I took it of with a few just bolts and wire diconnects, to ensure there were no loose parts in there, which I did not see or felt any. The system seems to be cooling still, but the noise after the auto shut off is mind buggling. Please help. Thanks.

Hi

If your air conditioner is making a rattling noise, your fan is probably loose. Open it up and tighten the screw that is located in the center of the fan. You can also try a piece of plywood or Plexiglas that sits between the edge of the unit and the window jamb. If you bring exact measurements to the hardware store they might cut a piece of material to size. Rattling could be fixed by getting a snugger fit. You might want to take off the faceplate and check to make sure that the foam insulation isn't loosened
Call your repairman if you cant really diagnose the actual problem.

I Located the fan blower, the fan was loose it looks like its worn through the center. The bolt is tight, with a jam nut securing it in place on the fan axis. Do I need a replacement of the whole blower unit or there is a way to remedy the problem?

There is a thumping sound coming from the rear end of my '06 Grand Prix. It isn't a constant thump and sometimes it happens when I apply the brakes

The thumping Would likely be warped rotors causing the pads to rock in the carrier, (Assuming the anti rattle clips were installed at the time brakes were replaced?) Turn or replace rear rotors

Sounds like a rattle under the van when stopped or idleing

It is most likely an exhaust heat shield or a catalytic converter that is breaing apart inside. Get underthe van when it has cooled off and "thump" the exhaust with your fist to see if you can locate the rattle. Often, the heat shield welds break where they are attached to the catalytic converter. I have fixed many of them by taking 2 or 3 large screw-type hose clamps and screwing them together to make them long enough to reach all the way around the catalytic converter and tighten them down to stop the rattle. If the noise sounds like it is coming from INSIDE the converter, you will have to replace the catalyst. (or ignore the noise)
