Light on the back of the phone is permanently on. how can I switch it off?

Hold down the power and home button at the same time until the screen goes black (keep holding past the slide to turn off). Then turn it back on after a couple minutes. This is a hard restart. It will take about 5-10 minutes to boot back up. It should fix most iphone anomalies.

Screen on iphone has gone white what causes this

held down the power and home buttons for a couple of minutes while I was reading something on my laptop, and my iphone did reboot. I must have held the buttons for at least 5 minutes.

I guess i just drained the battery, and it works now

Iphone Screen not lighting up

If you are using a case, the iPhone 3G and original iPhone cases are not compatible, so it may be covering the proximity sensor. If you have a case or something else on the phone, try taking it off. When the proximity sensor detects something covering it, the screen will go off to help preserve battery life (such as when the phone is up to your face) however if a case is covering it, it will assume that it still needs to be off.
