The response just received doesn't address my issue. I have isolated the source of the blue/black streak as being related the feeder mechanism that feeds multiple pages. I can feed the pages by hand to the flat tray ...with no black/blue streaks 1 3/8" from the edge of the paper. There is a "notch" and "wheel" on the underside of the feeder mechanism that corresponds with the location of the streak.

  • James711 Jul 22, 2010

    Yes.

  • James711 Jul 22, 2010

I have carefully isolated the source of the streak as coming from the transport mechanism...apparently "inside" the paper transport path.

  • James711 Jul 22, 2010

With the exception of the first "expert response" from fixya, the responses of each additional "expert" demonstrate that the "expert" hasn't read the thread of previous experts regarding the "issue".

The issue has been isolated to the Document Feeder.

  • James711 Jul 22, 2010

latest action did not resolve the issue with document feeder.

  • James711 Jul 22, 2010

Cleaning the Corona wires was done early.

As reported multiple times previously in this fixya exchange copies, faxes, or printing that isn't fed through the document feeder does not contain a streak.

  • James711 Jul 22, 2010

the issue of Document Feeder producing a "line" when the line is not produced on any other output of the machine ...has not been addressed.

  • James711 Jul 23, 2010

The fuser is NOT the problem.
The fuster is a good condition.
The "problem" is the Document Feeder.

....as reported multiple times in the many non-solutions to the current issue.

  • James711 Jul 23, 2010

YOur links do not address the "Document Feeder" being the source of the streak.

  • James711 Jul 23, 2010

    Yes.

Well you have indeed sorted your own problem, what gives it aways is when you said there was a wheel that corresponds with the line, what is happening i think, is that this is leaving a very faint crease, or the paper is NOT opaque enough, and the scanners, CCD device, "Sees" this crease, ghost image, and prints it accordingly, try scanning in B&W ONLY. I bet this sort your issue. If it does, than also you need to use a more opaque paper, that will limit the Scan depth & sensitivity. If possible, put a black, sticker over that wheel, and test again, see if that helps...

Dugh! I taped a white piece of paper over the "V" in the white bar.

    Problem solved.

Congratulations .....especially for your reading the definition of the problem. None of the other (I think it has been 12) "experts" addressed the specifics of the problem.

Remove the printer cover remove the "fuser" roller assembly; it is a series of rollers at the back of the printer dissasemble the roller that looks like it has a brown plastic sleeve on it remove the roller end, find a
"fuser film sleeve" for your model printer on ebay; remove the old fuser film sleeve; put the new fuser film sleeve on the fuser roller; reassemble everything; the printer should be fixed: however this is not an easy job to do.

I'm soory I could not read the whole post.
remove the document feeder cover and, clean the paper feed rollers / wheels with isoprophyl (rubbing) alcohol
you can also rough them up a bit with fine sandpaper or, steel wool; to clean them if they are not worn too much.
for future reference: if they are too slick and, do not grab the paper you can use rubber belt and, wheel restorer

  • James711 Jul 23, 2010

The paper feeder is working a-OK.

There is something somewhere in the document feeder path that is producing a vertical bar 1 3/8" from the sheet edge.

Description of Problem 100000012622
How do I clear vertical lines, streaks, or smudges that appear on printed documents?

Description of Solution 200000016173
Print a test page from your computer that shows the lines or streaks.

Determine the type of line(s) you see:

- If the line(s) are straight, well defined lines follow Procedure A: Cleaning the Corona Wires inside the Drum.

- If the line(s) are smudgy, smeared steaks go to Procedure B: Toner Cartridge Inspection S

Procedure A: Cleaning the Corona Wires Inside the Drum:

1. Power off the Brother machine using the power switch located on the right side of the machine.

2. Press down on the front cover release lever and open the front cover by pulling it towards you.

3. Hold the green handle of the drum unit (labeled 1). Lift the drum unit up and then pull it out until it stops.
NOTE: If you cannot pull the drum unit out, make sure that the front cover is fully open.

4. Remove the toner cartridges one at a time, by holding the handle of the cartridge and lifting it up and out of the drum unit.
Note: We recommend you place the toner cartridge(s) on a clean, flat surface with a piece of disposable paper underneath it in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner.

5. Lift the white plastic corona wire cover by lifting the tabs located on the right and left side of the cover.

6. Clean the corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab from left to right several times.
Note: Be sure to return the tab to the home position. If you do not, printed pages may have a vertical stripe.

7. Close the corona wire cover.

8. Repeat Steps 5 through 7 to clean each of the remaining three corona wires.

9. Reinstall the toner cartridge(s):
NOTE: Before reinstalling the toner cartridge, shake the toner cartridgeside to side.

10. Hold the handle of the toner cartridge and slide the toner cartridgeinto the drum unit. Make sure that you match the toner cartridge color to the same color label on the drum. Fold down the toner cartridge handle once the toner cartridge is in place. Repeat this for all the toner cartridges.

11. Push the drum unit back into the machine until it clicks into place.

12. Close the front door and power on the Brother machine.

13. Print the test page from your computer again.

- If the test page looks fine, the issue has been resolved.

- If the issue remains, and your machine is within warranty, please call Brother Customer Service Center at 1-877-Brother (1-877-276-8437) .The center is open Monday-Friday, excluding holidays.

If your machine is out of warranty, you can locate a Brother Authorized Service Center (ASC) in your area by calling the number listed above.

Procedure B: Toner Cartridge Inspection

4. Remove the toner cartridge that matches the color of the streak, by holding the handle of the cartridge and lifting it up and out of the drum unit.
Note: We recommend you place the toner cartridge on a clean, flat surface with a piece of disposable paper underneath it in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner.

5. Look inside the slot where the toner was installed for paper dust, labels or a piece of paper in the slot, if you find something please remove it.

6. Inspect the toner cartridge roller for uneven coverage, if you see uneven coverage, the toner cartridge will need to be replaced.

Was that a sufficient answer to your question about streaks on the edge?

  • Duane Wong
    Duane Wong Jul 22, 2010

The blue streak could be coming from a different routing of the paper through the rollers.

The rollers may be contaminated from past problems which were later rectified by the user.

I wish you luck in fixing this problem on your brother printer.

Check out the the rollers from where the paper passes. If any powder from the laser toners has got spilled on the paper passing roller then this problem can come up. Try this.Remove all the cartridges from the printer. Then turn the printer off. Then take a air blower and blow air in the printer where the cartridges are inserted. Also blow air every where from dust can enter.also blow in the paper tray in which the paper is placed.Clean some dust with a dry cloth if its got stuck on the roller. In some cases the toner gets stuck up and air blower does not blow that hard stuck powder. Then re check and see if the streak is coming on the paper or any difference. Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

Blowing air into Document Feeder is a good approach.

I will acquire a "blower" or "canned compressed air".

I didn't want to "apply screwdriver".

For surety (reported multiple times to previous responders): The black/blue streak does not appear on the fax or copy if I don't use the document

  • James711 Jul 22, 2010

The streak is still present after blowing.

There is a "notch" and (apparently) a roller located +/- 1 3/8" from the rear of the scanner bed of the document feeder

Hello,

There are few possible reasons that can cause these problem, first, the fuser assembly may be damaged or at the end of its life. The solution is to replace the fuser assembly. Repairing a fuser assembly is generally not recommended because the fuser is considered a consumable printer part and not worth the time or effort to fix. Second, the toner cartridge may be defective and letting too much toner out at one time, thereby causing the black blue streak, you may need to clean the toner cartridge, but if problem persist, replace the toner cartridge.

Also, some toner may have spilled in the printer. If so, you'll need to clean it out.

Take care.

The streak is not present when printing or copying from the flat bed.

I have cleaned everything reachable without removing screws on the feeder mechanism.

  • James711 Jul 22, 2010

I have isolated the source of the blue (when making a color copy) and black when making black toner copy.

I have wiped everything accessible without removing screws from the feeder mechanism.

This device is a very powerful device which is an efficient printer, though only marginal for photos, is a solid choice for adding a little color to work documents.
The printer gives this streak on your documents because of the hefty toner rack which it is fitted with. The toner has been over used and is due for replacement if this is replaced the black blue streak problem can be kissed goodbye.Brother MFC-9440CN Document Feeder
Hope this solution has been helpful?

To the left of the A4 scanner glass, there is a narrow glass strip. This is when the top document feeder scans from. Check for any contamination (even a small speck) on this glass at about the position of the vertical line.

Brother MFC 9440CN - I am getting "Document Jam"

Take the cover off of the ADF, rub clean the rollers with a damp cloth. Make sure there is no paper stuck in the area Also, check that the sensor flags are activating. just move them back and they should bounce back to normal position. Cleaning should do the trick.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response. Thanks, Joe
