I have a maxtor 3200 but my computer wont recognise it anymore. it makes a whining sound. help

The clicking sound from a hard drive is known as "The click of death". This drive is faulty and if you need data off this hard drive then there are companies that can recover data off a faulty hard drive BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

However last month I found that the Maxtor is no longer recognisable to my machine. Reading through related postings on other sites it appears that Vista updates from Microsoft may be the reason why this functionality has suddenly ceased. I presume the security updates in particular may have meant that the Maxtor 3200 is also considered a potential threat. The question is who will take responsibility for resolving this issue of Maxtor 3200 users no longer being able to access their back up files via their Vista based machines. Personally I believe the onus is with Microsoft

see if the warranty is still inforce and have it replaced. because the drive is bad..

Try connecting the Maxtor to another computer and if it functions normally, then backup your data. Then try formating the Maxtor on your computer.

hdd problem,, 50% can fix you hdd.. if you have inportant data just make recover.. you can't use that for install program and operating system just only for external, save data but dangeros also maybe someday it wil not work totaly..

First, try another USB Cable. If that does not work properly then I would suspect the box or the drive has failed. If you just bought it, return it to the store and complain. They may replace it. As for your data?

Now if you want to become techie you can remove the hard drive from the box and attach it to you computer either copy the files back if you do not have them on your computer or format the drive if you have your files. Then put the drive back in the box and try to get a refund or buy a different external. I like a metal box with an AC cord plug. Best of luck.

what was the voltage difference between the supplied adaptor and the one you plugged in by mistake ?

Hi Crkinard.. i think you shuld first find out whether the problem is with the external device or your computer... so check if the device is recognised by another system... as you have been using the device dor couple of years i think yours computer's drive for external devices should have been corupted.. so check out the device with some other computer.. if it is recognised in that computert then you can easily reinstalled the software for your device again..

Make sure the drive is formatted for the appropriate file system.
