Question about Garmin GPS Devices

1 Answer

The unit will not accept or hold a charge. The low battery sign pops up intermittantly while on charge while driving. The charging cord hook up to the unit seems to me to be a part of the problem because when touched it initiates several responses from the unit including charging and low battery. We bought the unit late last year and have not been able to use it effectively at all.

Can I charge the magellin GPS using a wall charger, plugged into the USB port on the GPS unit if I had rechargeable batteries in it? Or will it blow up? Lol

Yes your magelon already has rechargeable batterys so when in your car you keep it plugeg in all the time.I had a adapter plug with the same voltage output but the positive negitive is backwards. If while pluged into your y fi cord turn on the magelon go to settings you should be able to see the battery leavel if it is stuck on full charge then the y fi cord isnt working but if it is charging from low bar to top bar it will work if not you can buy a wall charger made just for that and again you dont need to replace the batterys unless it wont hold a charge for longe when removed from the car but that is usual for those gps,s not to hold a charge for long when out of the car thats just how it is.

Tomtom one will not turn on. Will eventually come on for 2 seconds then goes off again. Power cords work on other devices and outlets work on other devices. Have tried repeatedly to 'reset' and hold...

Powers on then off is usually a sign that the battery in the unit is no longer holding a charge, i would suggest that you check the battery and make sure that it is holding a charge and if not, change the battery out, these gps units have a dead circuit in them, if the battery is no good then usually the unit will not turn on, also for testing purposes if you pull the battery then try powering up the unit it may turn on, if this happens then you know the battery needs to be replaced.

I turn it on, logo comes on, and it turns off. I've tried holding the on button 8 sec, no luck.

With the limited information provided, a simple first step is to make sure the internal battery is either fully charged or is in a condition to accept a charge. When the internal battery's charge is allowed to below a certain level, it will no longer be capable of accepting a charge via the car charger.

The battery can be conditioned to accept a charge easily, however. This is done by connecting the GPS to the computer via USB port, NOT the car charger. Some Garmin GPS units come with a 120 volt charger that connects to the USB port of the GPS - this method is also an acceptable charge / condition method. Leave the GPS connected for 8 hours or longer (over night) and try to power up again.

I hope this helps!

I cannot use the GPS unit while in charge mode(NUVI 350)

Are you using a USB cable & charger to operate the GPS?

If so, you should stop and use the supplied cradle / power cord to power the GPS instead. The USB cable is used to transfer data to and from the GPS and on other models (maybe your 350, too) to slow charge the GPS battery when completely discharged. Powering with the USB cable will power up the GPS, but does not allow navigation, mapping, etc.

Hit Navigator key, takes a very long time 20+ min to find location.

There is a problem with your battery level. Make sure its fully charged. if it does not hold a charge when off the power for at least 2 hours then change it. 99.9% of the time low power delays connection to satellites. the max timke is about 9mins but average 1-2mins .....20 mins is not acceptable. I would suspect the battery.

DO NOT power the unit prior to starting the engine when using DC plug of car This will burn off the IC CHIP and damage your units battery.

Since I updated my Nuvi, the unit will not charge

I have answered many questions about this unit but yours is the 1st i have seen with this problem, if the charger checks ok with a volt meter (go to radio shack and ask them to test it most will) and the unit works when hooked up in the car to a working power point then the battery is defective, they last about 2 years at best.

Garmin Forerunner 205 Battery won't charge. A few

Hey everyone. Just called Garmin and got it fixed. Sometimes the forerunner goes into power saver mode and needs to be reset

1. Hook up the usb cable and docking station to the computer.
2. Next, hook up your forerunner to the Docking station - It should pop up saying battery charging in progress
3. Leave it all hooked up and Hold the Mode and Lap/Reset Button together for 15 seconds - screen should go blank.
4. Let both go - should pop back up saying battery charging in progress.
5. Let Charge 20 minutes and it should be good to go.

Hope this helps!!!

Sounds like you both have a battery problem. I experienced a similar problem when trying to charge via the USB-cable connected to my computer.
Ended up buying an original charger (expensive) and the charging went smooth.
The car charger should in any case work fine, so probably your battery is not very healthy.

Try holding your finger on the battery symbol for about 10 sec. The unit will then switch to a technical page. There you can observe the battery and charging voltage. When I plug in my computer USB-cable, I read around 4,4V and that is not sufficient for charging my battery.
When connected to the original charger, this voltage rises to about 5V which gives a nice charge. When unplugging charger, the unit displays the battery capacity. If the charging voltage is OK, but battery capacity drops quickly after you unplug charger cable, the battery is probably bad. (Of course you have to charge is for some time) I think around 4V battery voltage give 100% capacity. 3,9V gives about 90% capacity.
This will not solve your problem, but can give you an idea about what is wrong.
Good luck.

When I hook up the unit to be charged, it will not accept a charge unless you push the cord in and hold it there. Is there a solution to this problem and if not does the unit have a warranty and will it be...

You didn't mention the model number. Either the cord has an intermittant break or the power connector is intermittant.

If you bought the unit from a well known chain store, the warranty will be honored. If you bought it off of eBay/auction, the manufacturer will not honor the warranty.

Make sure the unit has been registered online with the manufacturer before you call them. You will need to send them both the cord and the GPS as its not clear which has the problem.

By the way, apparently Fixya doesn't like their experts referring people back to the factory (they warned me about this) but if its under warranty, you're best bet is to have the manufacturer repair or replace it for you, free of charge. Sorry Fixya.....there is no better solution to this problem.

What is the purpose of the car plug with the c330?

If you charged the GPS using the USB cable from a computer, this is too low a current for the size of battery that it has. You must use the dedicated AC charger, or the car charger.

If your unit has a battery in it that is older than about 3 to 4 years, it is possible that the battery is no longer able to hold the full charge.

The service rep for your GPS can change the battery for you if it is no longer holding the charge.
