Hi! Please try this. Remove the black cartridge and shake well. Check the ink well if there are dried inks that may block the ink flow then use a cloth to clean it. Reinsert the black ink cartridge then run cleaning. This should print normally after the procedure. Hope this helps and have a good one!

Description of Problem 100000016357
When I print a document from my computer, the text is gray, dull, light or faded instead of black. What can I do?

Description of Solution 200000021007
By default, the Brother machine is designed to conserve ink. This will result in text documents appearing gray, dull, or faded instead of black. If you would like text to appear black, please complete the following steps: NOTE: With this setting, more ink will be used than when using default settings.

WINDOWS USERS:

1. Click START -> (SETTINGS) -> CONTROL PANEL -> PRINTERS (AND FAXES) or PRINTERS AND OTHER HARDWARE then VIEW INSTALLED PRINTERS

2. Right click on the Brother printer driver and left click on PRINTING PREFERENCES.

3. On the BASIC tab under QUALITY, choose FINE from the dropdown box.

4. Click APPLY -> OK. NOTE: that by adjusting this setting the Brother machine will use more ink than when using default settings.

MAC USERS:

1. From within the print dialog box, select the APPLICATION dropdown and choose PRINT SETTINGS.

2. On the BASIC tab under QUALITY, choose FINE from the dropdown box.

3. Click OK or PRINT. NOTE: that by adjusting this setting the Brother machine will use more ink than when using default settings

The problem is not about quality. Black color isn't printed, I can't print text and extracted paper is blank.

According to Brother.com's website, the printer by default tries to save black ink by not printing it completely black, unless one chooses 'fine' quality under the Basic tab.

Also, did you remove the tape from the black cartridge? I've done that before and gotten no black, on my inkjet printer.

Otherwise, Brother recommends that you send it in for service if it doesn't function correctly.

My Brother MFC-490CW prints magenta where it should be printing black. I have done numerous cleanings and alignments. I changed the black cartridge and it is a Brother cartridge, not a refill. Still...

Well, either your print settings have it set to print in a color model that is not the native one (I can get this from CUPS drivers by picking KMCY instead of CMYK, among others) or it is confused enough to need Brother's initializing tool (program, I mean) to get it sorted out. Try de-weirding your settings first, then double-check the print dialog's settings when you retry. Nobody loves magenta-on-white for print.

I have put a new black cartridge in printer but nothing is printing out- when I run a test the color cartirdge are working but not black

Hmmm, make sure it is properly fitting in there.... Take it out and put it back in.... Usually the printer performs some kind of "preparing the ink" operation... SO allow it to does this...... Make sure you are using genuine ink, sometimes printers won't accept non-genuine inks.... Hope this helps :)

I have a brother MFC-490CW and replaced the black ink, and my color ink has run out. It will not let me print as it says ink is low, so it won't even let me use the black? How do I print with only using...

By design, Brother printers stop all printing when one of the cartridges is empty. This is done to avoid cleaning cycles sucking air into the system, which could possibly damage the printhead.

Even if you print in black only by changing the print settings to "Mono" or "Grayscale" to avoid printing in color, cleaning cycles would still **** air from the empty color cartridge because they are programmed to clean ALL the ink nozzles. The only way to continue printing is to replace the empty ink cartridge(s).

After replacing the empty color cartridge, you could print in "Mono" or "Grayscale" to make better use of just the black ink.

Black ink is not dispensing

There may be an air bubble in the black tubing, it will take several more cleaning cycles to clear. You can tell it to clean only the black and save the other inks.

My Brother MFC-490CW won't print

Did you try onboard print test by pressing INK LEVEL button. I am having similar problem but color prints but black does not. The printer has built in diagnostics that walks you thru some troubleshooting steps. It has you repeat cleaning 5 times and then asks you to replace cartridges if test fails...than repeat tests and call customer support if that does not work. Which I may do soon.
