Do you have instructions for the router? They should be available from the D-link site. Connect the router to the computer with a network cable. Type cmd into your run box on the start menu then type ipconfig into the window that opens and note the IP address of the DHCP server, which should be in the form 192.168.x.1 and log into it by opening your browser and putting that no. into the address bar. This allows you to control the router and examine its settings. With the information you obtain it should be possible to connect the computer wirelessly, using the either windows wireless manager, which should be an icon near the clock, or the program that belongs to the wireless receiver.

If your computer came with the card preinstalled, you shouold be able to get drivers from your computer manufactures web site, under your specific computer model. Also, depending on the router, you may have to configure it the first time using an Ethernet cable, after that you can change to wireless.

Did you load the DLink software onto your computer? If so you have to configure the DLink control Panel to recognize the Internal wireless card in the computer. You may also need to take the wireless card out and restart your computer, then shut it back down and reinstall the card so the computer can recognize the card and reinstall the drivers. If it cant find suitable drivers it wont install. While you have the card out look at the brand and version number and try to download software to desktop to install in case windows cant find any.If you have a cat5 (ethernet) cable you can go hard wired till you get the wireless working.

My DLink router isn't working properly and I called my cable provider to check on it . Since I can get to the internet on my desk top PC (through cable provider), we determined something was wrong with the...

Thanks for using Fixya! we happen to have the same router DLink I also have a PC and a laptop wireless and cable hooked up. What I had to do to get it to work all around was go to 192.168.0.1 and login to the router itself. If you have not already changed this out it will be its default setting for the username and password which is, admin for both username and password, usually I just have t login he username top one only, if you are going to change that make sure that you will remember what you placed if you do forget all you have to do is unplug the router from the wall socket and let it set for about 30 seconds this sets the default password back to "admin". Then once logged in go to wireless and do the setup option automatically you may have to provide a user name and password for access to the wireless portion of your router and access to the Internet.
You do not want to leave this open for public as far as security for yourself is concerned. If you are not worried about that then open to the public in your area it will provide folks Internet "Free" your dime I used to do this when I did not have a bank account online. It is not suggested just what I do!
Now be sure that once you have all these configurations setup and read the information once at the DLink page. Check it out you can also learn how to allow certain pages from being opened and allowed to pass through the router. So I had to go in and learn about settings and do this myself it is a lot easier these days compared to when I first started using them.
The reset button is located on the rear portion of the router. If you wish to reset the router I use a toothpick and push the little button where it says reset this resets my router in case something gets out of sorts which often does. Depending on how many times you move the cables or change out computers I repair several at a time so often I have to reset the router and modem. It is not uncommon to do so. This is why they now use DYNAMIC IP services. This is a set device IP assigned by your Internet Provider.
I do hope that this gives you some sort of an idea and what to look for or how to get the router to chat with your modem and your computers. Another help site for Dlink Click Here! Thanks for using Fixya! Please post a vote for me if this assisted you at all? John

carry out the resetting of the dlink router
then use lan cable to gain access to dlink router,
set up the internet conenction (i.e. your internet provider modem plugged into the dlink router also)

if it has a built in wizard then just follow the on screen instructions

you will need to define SSID (wireless network name) and passkey (password for the wireless connection)

and the your done. disconnect the laptop from wired connection and connect via wireless

Globe symbol won't turn green.

I was banging my head for 2 days with about 35 different configurations and finally tried the following and it worked just fine. Also, tried connecting 3 computers and they all connected with "NO" issues. Even connected wireless with "NO" issues. Now I am at 20mb download speed...J compared to AT&T 1.5mb download speed.

This is my DLINK model -> (DIR-601 Wireless N 150 Home Router Wireless router)

1. Reset your Comcast Surfboard Cable Modem by unplugging it for 5 minutes.

2. Then reset your DLINK Router to the manufactures default settings. Then Unplug DLINK Router for 1 minute then plug it back in (Just plug your cat5 cable into port 1 and connect it to your computer) there should not be anything else plugged into the DLINK Router at the time you make the changes. Just 1 computer can be connected.

3. Went into the DLINK configuration 192.168.0.1 and changed the PPPOE setting that I was using for my AT&T Modem to Dynamic IP (DHCP). Once you make the changes save them and then unplug your DLINK Router it's off.

4. Turn on Comcast Surfboard Cable Modem and wait until all lights are on. Now plug in a cat5 cable from the Surfboard Comcast modem (NOT A CROSSOVER CABLE LIKE THE CD INDICATES) to the INTERNET port of your DLINK Router. Now turn on your DLINK router.

5. Then turn on your computers or restart them and it will pick up IP Addresses from your DLINK Router

Connect dlink wireless router to cable modem

If your cable modem was operative ...here's an easy procedure:

1. Turn off all network routers, modem, computers..
2. Turn on the power to the DLink router. let it cycle up.
3. Connect your ethernet from the Dlink to the cable modem and then turn the power on to the cable modem and let it cycle up.
..this will "fool" the cable modem into finding your dlink as the "computer" ..since the cable modem is set up for only one computer, if the dlink is the "computer" that it locks in, then go ahead and turn on all other computers and etc...you should be able to get online wirelessly..
Follow the order of events above and it should be cool.

Can not connect laptop to router ?

The 1st thing I recommend is you connect the laptop directly to the Dlink router using a standard patch network cable. See if you can get on the internet using that method. If you can't then we know you have a problem somewhere else.

did this model ship with a built in wireless card?

Thanks,
Brad Nelson

Can't Connect to wireless router

First, if you are using XP, and installed the Dlink Adapter Utility on your computer, you need to turn off the Windows Zero Wireless Configuration Utility in the Services Panel.. (it is not a good idea to run both the Proprietary Utility (Dlink) AND the Windows Utility..

If you did not install this Dlink Utilty, Ignore the following!

Start > Run > services.msc (ok)

Services Window pops up.

Scroll down to the Windows Zero Wireless Configuration and Disable it.

Now, try to connect again and see if the password box comes up!

BTW: you need to make sure that the type of Encryption you setup on the router is compatible with your card. In other words, make sure that if you enabled WAP that the card supports it...
