Question about Hotpoint HTS16HBR Top Freezer Refrigerator

1 Answer

Water collects at bottom/Ice forms in top

I have a 28-year-old Hotpoint CTF 15 that is lately collecting water at the bottom, under the bins. Thin sheets of ice are also collecting on tops of containers in the top left hand side of the fridge section. Other than that, everything's just perfect!

PS. I love my fridge! If you can tell me exactly how to clear the drain, I'd much appreciate it.

Hi,

The defrost drain is located just under the cooling coils in the back of the freezer. You will need to unload the food and remove the shelves from the freezer. Take the back panel off from inside the freezer and you will see a hole just below the coils. Flush it with hot water using a turkey baster or small hose. See the link below for more details.

The refrigerator has a blocked condensate drain line. In most Hotpoint models it is easily accesed by pulling out the bin at the bottom. There should be a drain grommet at the center of a trough in back. This plugs up. You may have to pour hot water the thaw out the ice and then either blow out the drain tube or I use a 5/15 plastic hose and push it through the drsin to clear it out. this should fix the problen for a long time. Food particles etc. collect in the drain and ice forms around them and blocks the drain.

Our icemaker makes cubes, but leaks water from the ice tray area, creating a 2 inch block of ice in the bottom of the ice cube collection bin each night.

Have a look at the manual on page 6 for adjustment procedure.

Also, your leak may be due to a water valve that is not able to turn off 100%. Valve replacement would be necessary. Unplug your icemaker electrical, and empty the ice. Leave the water turned on. If you keep getting water collecting in the bin, you are likely looking at a water valve replacement (not hard at all, just inconvenient).

Water collects under the produce bins at the bottom and leaks out

Your evaporator coils frost up in normal use and every eight hours or so the entire unit shuts down and the defrost heater comes on to melt the frost. This cycle last about 20 minutes. The melted frost drips into a drain pan and through a drain tube to the drain tray under the freezer/refrigerator where it's evaporated by the condenser fan.

Your drain tube may be stopped up with ice at the upper end because it drains too slow because it's stopped up at the lower end in the evaporator pan under the unit at the floor. It can get dust and mold in it. Once you get the ice out at the top a little pressure with a turkey baster will usually clear it out. Flushing it out with hot water and clorox may help.

Collecting water at bottom of frig inside under drawers.

begin by removing the grill on the front at floor level. look under there and you will see the evaporation pan. next pull the fridge out from the wall so you can get behind it. there you will see the tube. to unclog it you will have to disconnect it at the top and force hot water into it using a turkey baster.

Water in bottom of refrigerator coming from freezer (not really sure of the exact model as I'm not home to double check).

If water appears on the floor in front of the refrigerator once or twice a day, it could be due to a clog in the defrost drain tube. The usual evidence of a clogged drain in a side-by-side refrigerator is ice under the bottom basket in the freezer compartment, in addition to a puddle of water on the floor.
