Indexing service doesn't work.

Indexing service, for Vista Ultimate, doesn't seem to be working. When I type a search for a file in the start bar - it just seems to 'think' endlessly. If I open the 'search everywhere' option - it tells me that indexing is turned off. I'm given the option to turn it back on - but it doesn't turn on. When I go into services - it tells me that Windows Search is enabled. How do I get indexing to work?

IF you have a full genuine copy of windows, check the microsooft knowledge base.
IF you have a cracked/copied version, it may be of an earlier build, not the final version. This may be the problem you have.
THis may also be a virus/malware infection. Scan for both in safe mode

Search box is not in start?

Your index requires virtually no maintenance. However, if the index has problems finding files that you know should be located in an indexed location, you might need to rebuild the index. This can take a long time to complete, so avoid performing this step unless you have given the index enough time (several hours) to correct any problems first. To rebuild the index:
1. Open Indexing and Search Options by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Indexing Options.
2. Click Advanced, click the Index Settings tab, and then click Rebuild. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

OR

Select Troubleshoot a problem from the taskbar and type in search field: Windows search. Then select Search and Indexing and use the wizard to fix the problem. The search service was not started. Worked for me

1 TB external core hard drive not working on dell dimension 8200

When You add a new drive to all versions of Windows since ME, the Indexing Service software counts every file on the drive and adds the smaller ones into the registry. This will seem like a freeze with a large drive even with a multiple core processor, since the Indexing service only uses one of the cores.
Indexing cannot be turned off in Vista without effort. It takes more than a couple of clicks. It requires serious registry hacking to remove or disable in seven.
Try this, start the computer without the external drive connected. Then add the external drive AFTER you are logged in and have internet access.

Wait and watch the drive light(s), especially on the external drive. When they stop flickering you should be good to go.

If prompted for Admin Access, answer yes
3) Scroll down to the "Windows Search" service, select it, and click Stop.
4) From the Start Button, type "regedit"
If prompted for Admin Access, answer yes
5) Browse to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Search]
6) Verify that the values DataDirectory and DefaultDataDirectory are set to %ProgramData%\Microsoft\Search\Data\

How do i stop windows search 4.0 from indexing internet explorer, it indexes on every web page i go to, internet explorer history shows up on summary of selected locations but cant get rid of

Does Windows Search only work on Windows XP, or does it also work on Vista? If you are using Windows XP, you can uninstall Windows Search 4.0 by going to the add remove software icon in the control panel.
In Windows 7, to remove Internet Explorer History from the indexed locations list, click the Start Button, and then type: control /name Microsoft.IndexingOptions then hit enter. in the Indexing Options, you can see the items listed. Click Modify, and on the Indexed Locations window that pops up, uncheck the box next to Internet Explorer History.
If you are on Windows Vista and find that neither of these suggestions work, sorry about that. I don't have a vista machine to try it on because I can't stand vista.

Win7 64bit - the search function is not working at all - how do I fix it?

If you have just installed windows 7 search function will take time to index the files in your computer (this will be done when you are not using the computer).
If you have installed windows 7 long back and then the search function is not working check the following.
1. Click on start 2. In the search box type services.msc and hit enter 3. in the list of services running, double click on Indexing Service and check the status. 4. If the status is stopped then start it. 5. Also check if the startup type is changed to automatic.

I have lost sound to my laptop, says windows audio service not installed

hello Jenny bootte I do not know if this will work but
  1. goto the start menu
  2. type in the search bar "device manager"
  3. the window will open
  4. go to the top the window to the "actions" menu
  5. from that menu select "scan for hardware changes"
the reason this might work is because it sounds like your driver to your audio was uninstall,or improperly installed.
